Topic of your choice? really free?

today i met one of the former adcoms of MIT, who told me that the PS on commonapp can only be about the first five possible topics, while the sixth "topic of your choice" is actually "a trick"...

that's what he said after reading my commonapp essay, which apparently doesn't fit into any fields indicated by the first five ones from his perspective= =

Anyone can help? Is this horrible information true? or just in the case of MIT?

The current college students, if you can offer your own experience about that I will be extremely happy and grateful !!

well it was on a kinda consultation fair that I gave my commonapp draft to him to have a look~ you see, I have no plan to apply for MIT so I dunno they use their own appsystem><

no offense, but this guy just sounds like a really uppity MIT d-bag. if you think your essay sends the admissions offices the message you want to convey, then use it. the essay is supposed to give you a "third dimension," to bring you off the paper, and if one of the prompts given doesn't allow you to do that, then write about whatever does
