I was thinking about writing an essay about the crisis of 1998 that affected our family (my dad almost lost his business AND our house) and how it shaped me... The question is, is it fine to start with something that happened 10 years ago? and is it too dangerous of a topic to talk about business?

It works since it directly affected your life. Make sure you talk about how that instance really changed you in many different ways and how it has shaped your life, not just retelling what that incident was.
