"How you first learned about XYZ College?" essay

Several liberal art colleges supplemental require this essay with a 500-word limit. I wonder how they evaluate the contents of this kind of essay. Some says that it's only for marketing, which means we only need jot down several lines and don't care much about the idea of it. But why they set the word limit so high? Is it really not important? Thank you
