| College clothing style?
I go to a community college in Texas. As you expect, you won't find the fanciest and most well kept people there. However, I'd like to make a change for my sophomore year of college. I want to transition into more mature clothing. I'd like to wear more button down shirts, polos, and pants rather than jeans and graphic tees. Also maybe accessorize with watches. Would this be a good idea? Or would I end up getting dirty looks?

There's nothing really wrong with jeans... people even in elite private schools still wear jeans. Granted, they're designer jeans, though. It also depends on your school environment. If everyone wore tshirts and jeans and you showed up in a polo and khaki slacks, then you're going to stick out. You could go for an in-between look of a polo and jeans or something. This isn't exactly the best place to ask, though...

| What the heck? That's definitely not true. In fact, given the greater proportion of "nerds" at top schools, I'd bet that there are even fewer people at elite schools with designer jeans.

I don't have a problem with jeans. That's not the point I was trying to make.

Sounds good. As long as you don't wear graphic tees or cargos, you're good.
Get some Sperry's, North Face, Polos, Khakis, and Lacoste.

I am agreed with Atemporal, Lot's of students wearing jeans in collages and they looks good and decent in same time. Instead of graphic tees plain t-shirts are also in fashion. You can try with different sheds. But lastly you should go with the collage trend and environment.

I swear I'm gonna e-punch the next person who talks crap about cargo shorts. Where the hell do you expect me to put my cigarettes and my sunglasses case when I'm out and about?

Also, to clarify, I didn't imply that everyone wears designer jeans, but just that a ton of people do. At least at WashU.

Who really cares? If you feel the need to ask about what to wear, you my have some self esteem issues needing to be dressed.
At my university I've been wearing everything from all black w/chains and purple hair to over the top steampunk style. Everyone is going to get looks, some more than others. You shouldn't give a d*mn about it though, as long as you're comfortable in what you're wearing.

Alongside students wearing jeans, graphic t-shirts, and boots; you will look MUCH more professional wearing a crisp white dress shirt made of 100% cotton, a silk tie, tie tack/clip, wool pants, leather belt, cufflinks, and leather shoes. Remember to bring some glossy business cards and a pen made out of a high grade metal.
Stay away from polyester and other man-made flammable polymers/petroleum that could melt into your skin. Make sure your clothes fit.
You never know when you'll meet someone in business or romance who is worth it. You'll also get treated better at stores and you'll be able to leverage more social capital.

I say go for it. I always dress creatively/nice for class because I like to and I have an interest in fashion. You may stand out, but at least to me, it would be a good kind of standing out. Also, don't feel like you need to buy a bunch of expensive things. Some people wear expensive clothing and still look boring as hell.

Your in Texas, for goodness sake. Of course you need to ditch the jeans -- to hot. Wear cargo shorts.

Someone please articulate what is so awful about cargos? I see people wearing them all the time. Maybe they'll look out of place if you go to some ******bag preppy college where everybody dresses like a 50 year old country club member, but I think at most schools you wouldn't look particularly unique.
