How many units is typical for an incoming freshman?

Zero units from AP, IB, or college credit completed in high school is probably the median at the majority of colleges and universities. (One might say that a large percentage of students have "virtual negative" units due to the need to take remedial courses in college.)

I came in with ...English 101, Music Theory, European History, French... So 16 hours. I took 16 hours my first semester, so I was technically already a sophomore second semester.
I think most of my friends came in with at least a few hours (3 or 6), but then there were some crazies like my roommate who had like 20 hours... And I've even heard of people at my university coming in as seniors, so I'm sure their hours count more.
It really depends on the school. You would tend to think that the higher ranked the school, the better the students, so the more AP hours, but I think a lot of higher ranked schools limit the number of AP hours you can use if any.
If you're talking about hours to take per semester. It's 15 or 16 usually depending on the college.

I took 17 but they suggest 12-15 usually. Depends on the type of courses you're taking.

I came in with 12 credits already. I got 4 APs with 3 credits each, which is great for me. I am taking 15 credits fall semester as a freshman, so by next semester...I would be considered a soph level student. My college limits us to 16 credits per semester (unless dean gave permission)...so I'm good !!

I'm coming in with 48 credits as a freshman from all AP classes, so I would be considered a junior. As far as taking credits as a freshman goes, my university limits us to 18-20 max, depending on the program. Most likely, I will be taking around 16 credits.

I came in with 5 AP classes plus tested out of 3 more classes (3 classes required for gen ed stuff in Spanish and I tested out of all of that)...so 8 classes. However, the testing out of Spanish thing doesn't actually give us credit for those classes, only makes it so you don't have to take it. I only got credit for the 5 classes, so 20 semester hours I think. But my school doesn't add in your AP credits til after you finish 1 semester on campus. By spring semester, I had sophomore standing though. Now, going into my sophomore year, I have junior standing.

Forgot to say what I actually took in my first semester...19 semester hours....and then I took 22 in spring semester. I'm taking 19 this fall.
