Okay I didn't really know where to post this but I'll try here. Sorry if it is the wrong section though. Right now I'm going to community college, I graduated High School in 2012 so I went to college right after it. I started at the college going for a business major, but after 1 week that changed, so I dropped 2 of the classes, so I was only taking 2 classes, (college algebra and composition 1) after another week the algebra class was to much for me so I withdrew from that and I added a lower level math class but I'm auditing it, (I don't know if everyone knows this but one you audit a class it doesn't show up on your transcript) I deiced to do that because if I would transfer I didn't want a low level math class on it, and to look, stupid. So really this semester I'm only taking 1 class and thats composition, I've done 1 paper so far got an A on it, but I missed a class tuesday and it was in class essay so I got a 0 on that, so now that is just worrying me that now I wont be able to get the A I wanted in that class, now I didn't miss it on purpose I had to work late. Another thing I don't know what to major in, so I don't know what classes I should take in the spring semester except, I'm going to be taking Comp 2 and College Algebra, I know that. I've been trying to figure out a major because I feel so lost and useless without one. I have taught about several majors and looked them up, some majors I've thought about; IT, computer programing, graphic design, and business. I have issues with self esteem, so I see some kid or really anyone better then me. I think, "why should I go to college if people are already ahead of me without going to college?" then I'm also scared of picking a major that will be useless in the future. I'm not exactly looking to be rich but I would like to have enough to live a decent life and get by, but also have extra money to waste, I don't plan on marrying so It would just be single income. (this is a totally different story)

The reason I went to community college is the college I wanted to go to IPFW didn't' accept me, but I honestly excepted that, I didn't do well in high school at all, I think I got a 2.8 cumulative GPA, and ACT of 22. and I didn't do any sports and extra things. I pretty much went to high school and did the minimum.

So I need someone I could talk to that would help with picking a major? Is there such a thing?


Summary: I was lazy in high school got a 2.8 cumulative GPA and 22 ACT going to community college right now, no major taking 2 classes. Low self esteem, always compare myself to others so all majors I just see as someone can do it better why bother.

Why do you care about other people? I could care less if someone has a 4.0, some good major, etc. I'm not impressed by anything that I did not do myself.

Everybody needs to find their place in life. It may be through college, or through something else. I'd suggest emailing an assortment of profs at your college and ask if you can sit in one of their classes for a day. Check out different classes - including some vocational ones - and see where your interests and skills may be. Once you find your place it life, it will be much easier to be motivated. (Just don't choose to be a drama major - there are already one million too many of them). You will then have an easier time picking classes for the next semester.

If you really are still up in the air about your interests, you may be better off working full time and delaying college. Some people use all of the money and financial aid and loan capacity studying one subject, and then don't have the resources to complete a degree when they realize they want to study something completely different. However, a year of general study classes can be useful towards most degrees.

Also, take advantage of your college's career advising office. They may have some quizzes or other resources that help you define your interests and abilities.

If you have any aptitude for science and don't get grossed out easily, investigate health care fields. They currently are offering the most secure employment.

Also remember that you do not need to plan out your whole career at your age. Many people have careers that have little to do with their first couple years of college.

That's the beauty of community college. You can switch around and get a taste of the different majors and see what you like. I was a computer science major and had nearly everything done. I'm talking all the pre-reqs and ready to transfer (Except for 1 calculus class). At the last second I switched to business and spent an extra year working on my pre-reqs for that major. People switch all the time.

One thing I want to stress is that you cannot be missing classes, getting 0's, and dropping classes unless it is absolutely necessary. Community college is not that difficult and you should be able to obtain a high GPA (3.5+) if you are truly dedicated. You want to be that guy that everyone else looks at and says "Damn, that guy is smart. He has it together." Find something that will motivate you. I have a poster of my dream car pinned on my wall and every time I don't feel like doing homework or studying, it reminds me of why I need to. It sounds silly but motivation goes a long way.
