Do you not realize that $10 is twice as much as $5??

As I've said -- I've been getting rides since freshman year, and before last night, the most I've ever been asked to give in gas money is $5. This is why I think $10 is a lot. Because it is for my school.

It also has an extra premium for people younger than 25, if that's a concern.

Wow, you have some stingy friends. $10 for a ride to the grocery store?!? My friends with cars don't even charge for rides to the airport 40 minutes away!

I don't understand why everyone here seems to think that $10 is reasonable. Generally when you charge someone for gas money, the idea is that they pay you for the amount of gas that the trip used. If a 5-minute car trip requires $10 worth of gas, you probably might want to invest in a new car.

That being said, I've never owned a car (and have zero expectation of owning a car until I can pay for one) and I frequently just walk places. There's usually an alternative route that doesn't involve going along a highway.

No the OP does not have stingy friends. The OP has stated that his friends don't charge. The person who asked for $10 was only a distant acquaintance. The OP clearly has no real clue about the costs of car ownership never mind the cost in lost study time of chauffeuring people around.

The girl who wanted $10 isn't a friend. She's my friend's gf. And I agree, that is stingy which is why I said thanks but no thanks.

If I could walk to the grocery store, I would, but I can't.

I'm about 95% sure I know where you go to school, and $10 isn't a lot of money for that location

You're 100% incorrect in thinking that $10 isn't a lot for where I go to school.

Then pay the $10, sheesh.

I also want to know what school is so special that your $10 is different from another schools $10?

I would never pay anyone $10 to take me to the grocery store. I'd rather live off pasta and Ramen than do that.

SingDanceRunLife is aloof from the costs of actually owning a car and going out of the way to give somebody a ride.

I gotta say, this is a funny thread. Everyone is saying the same thing over and over and over for four pages straight. Hooray for repetition!

I think (speaking for myself) that the OP has a sense of entitlement.

I wouldn't pay $10 for a ride, either. I use other means of transportation. That doesn't make $10 an exorbitant price for a car ride, when you consider the costs of car ownership. Has it occurred to you that the people giving you rides for less might not be recouping all of their costs?

It seems strange to me that the only route to a grocery store from your campus is on a freeway. I don't know where you go to school so I can't say any more than that.
