Hey! I'm a junior at Ossining High School from Ossining in Westchester, NY. I have about a 96-98 average and I just took my SATs for the first time and I recieved Critical Reading 650, Math 590,Writing 580.

I am really interested in going to CUNY Honors (especially since my parents won't pay for college) at the City College, or Hunter. ( I would like to stay in a dorm.) I was wondering what my chances were and what i need to get it. I appreciate any help!

your scores are WAY too low. cuny honors will especially be more selective for the class of 2008. i would suggest the same advice i gave to the previous poster, increase your scores by at least 200 points.

i believe the SAT I is required for cuny honors, though i could be wrong. but thats a great ACT score nevertheless. brooklyn receives less applications than some of the other cuny schools, i wouldn't say its more competitive though their numbers are higher than the average. you could try calling the honors office at the school and make nice with the committee (trust me--it helps), and ask them about your situation. good luck.

I got in, early decision, into CUNY Honors @ Baruch with a 93 average.
I took the SAT twice, first time I got a 650 on math, 620 English, 610 Writing, second time I got a 600 on math, 570 english, and a 630 or 620 on writing.

I have had and heard so many bad things of cuny, I stay away, even though I would go for free. The education level is lower than that of HS.

BTW I got into Hunter Honors

89.5% gpa in hs and a 910 on my sat of 1600/

So then I am basically in right? I want this to be my saftey goat4d. My dream schools are Yale, princeton, brown and duke. Those are real schools.

dude I went to cuny Lehman, which also has a honors program. I wanted to take a calculus 1 course. The professor was so bad, he was from Serbia and half the time talked croatian. He came half an hour late and let students leave an hour and a half early. This was a summer course, and each class was 3 hours.

The level at which they taught was so low, you could tell the students there weren't the brightest, or maybe they were but the teachers sucked.

I went to go talk to the head of the math department, and he told me to bassicly **** off and leave him alone.






I will never touch a cuny school again, my brother made the mistake even as i told him not to go. he still went. My brother is much smarter than I am and about a quarter into the 2nd semester he fully dropped out of school as he just couldn't take the stupidity anymore.

let me ask you this, when doing a math problem, do you just do it fully in your head or do ya need to work it out. I know as a engineering student I need to work them out. My brothers 2 math classes at the cuny and including the cuny placement test(which is on a computer), you aren't allowed any scrap paper. On Math tests you have the question and a small box, with barely any enogh room for the answer. though you are strictly prohibited from having scrap paper and you need to write in pen. If you write outside of the small box you loose all credit for the problem.








I do have an idea pof what I am talking about Cuny Schools suck, I go to Suny UB and the level of education I got at UB is ontop of the empire state building, while the cuny was down below the subway.

All of these schools leap ahead of the cunys, but may be to expensive, but then again if you are planning to go to the schools you mentioned, you must be smart and some good merit based scholarships will be awarded.


if you are doing a Libeal art type major then cuny honors is great but anything with science and engineering, stay very very far away.

lehman is one of the worst cuny schools, if not the worst. a) its the easiest senior college to get into of cuny and b) its the easiest of all honors colleges. you can't base your opinion about the entire system just based on one school. and U@B sucks, i got a full tuition scholarship to attend that school as well. i would NEVER dorm there with all the idiots who attend to only get high and drunk every other night.

goat4d...are you serious when you said you got into hunter honors with those statistics?? you can't even get into hunter through standard admission with those crappy scores and grades. you MUST be kidding. and as for the other kid, its clear that applying early helps tremendously, but not to be rude, you would not have made it in the regular decision round with a 1270 SAT (not including writing).

goat4d, i go to baruch and even honors students who score 700+ on their math SAT need to work very hard to even get a B+ in a first semester calculus class. you can't go generalizing schools. "UCSB is full of too many lazy beach bums, so therefore UC-Berkeley must be the same." is that true? obviously not. btw, cuny city has an amazing engineering program if you're willing to take advantage of all it has to offer. these schools are by no means easy to get into. and i will repeat again, you did NOT get into hunter honors with your stats. sorry, but maybe you should just shutup and save yourself the embarrassment because nothing you say makes sense.

dont go to cuny honors if you're a top student/ it's goal isnt to educate the top. CUNY is a great institution....but not for the best and brightest.

they haven't been too keen on the writing scores for the class of 2010 nor 2011 but i would still try to raise it incase they start to make a note of it during admissions. you still have time, you have a pretty decent shot. good luck.

I'm going to be applying to Hunter Honors College next year (I'm a senior graduating in '08) and I'm just curious about my chances. It says on their website that they accept the ACT, so can anyone confirm this?


My grades and such:
SAT Reading - 680
SAT Math - 710
SAT Writing - 700
ACT Composite - 33
High school GPA: 96.5%
High school rank: 6%

Also, are you given freedom within the program to work with classes to sort of form your own major? I want to be a musical theatre composer, so I'm looking to combine music with some theatre experience and an internship with someone composing on broadway...is this possible?
