Are the shower floors really that dirty?

Just curious, post what school you go to, and say how gross the shower floors are. I'm wondering if flip-flops are really necessary....

When I was in the dorms I was too lazy to buy flip-flops and never had any problems. Luck of the draw I guess.

It's usually not too bad if you're in a suite, but corridor style shared bathrooms can get pretty awful. And just because a shower isn't visibly dirty doesn't mean there aren't some fun infections lurking... that said, I've never worn flip flops in my suite shower and the only problem I've ever had was one plantar wart.

"Dirty" is not always visible. Not the most thrilling discussion topic, but I picked up a plantar infection in 6th grade gym class, and 10 years and many podiatrist appointments later, it still bothers me.

Imagine how many people will be living on your floor who pee in the shower or shave (and not just their legs or faces!) in the shower, and then you'll know why flip-flops are recommended.

Yeah, ditto what cards4life said.

The floors do not appear dirty, but I would definitely not go without flip flops.

Our shower floor was fine. I never once used flip flops in the shower.

It depends on what kind of bathroom you have. If you have a suite, with only a few people, you should be fine as long as you clean it every so often. But if you're on a floor bathroom with 30+ people, you'd be better off safe than sorry.

Well, see, I lived on a coed floor with 7 girls and 29 guys. Even though I wore flipflops to the bathroom, most of the other girls didn't. Our bathroom was cleaner than most suites because there was only 3/4 people to each shower (and since there were never 2 people in a shower at any time, we pretty much always used the same ones) and it got cleaned twice a week. Next year I'm living in a "castle" in one of the towers, so there are 8 girls on a floor with 2 shower stalls. The bathrooms get cleaned twice a week at least, so that will probably be pretty clean too.

Um...I never took a shower without flip flops at school...ever.

In my first dorm, I was on the honors/engineering floor and we had an awesome cleaning lady (Miss Bonnie was seriously great) so our bathrooms never got gross or anything, but I still wasn't about to take my chances with the shower floors.

On the second floor of that dorm, though, the bathroom was so bad that a couple of girls actually moved to another dorm (different cleaning lady on each floor, obviously, and I dunno who didn't teach those girls better but yeah). I'm not trying to be gross or anything, but those girls left hair all over the showers and sometimes even used tampons and condoms in the little dressing area. Completely disgusting.

In my next dorm I was in a private room with a suit-mate (for only a quarter), and there was actually stuff growing in that bathroom. I don't know what was wrong with the girl that I shared the bathroom with, but yeah...grossness. She also seemed to have a problem with leaving hair all over the place. Too bad that seemed to be the least of her issues...glad I'm out of there.

In my university apartment that I'll be living in the next three years, on the other hand, the bathroom that I'll share with just one roommate (who, thankfully, is a good friend and a clean-freak) has been fairly well kept so flip flops will no longer be a necessary shower accessory. Yay!

So to answer your question more directly, there's a very good chance that flip flops are a good idea.

I always used flip flops..I just brought the pair I usually use at hotel bathrooms. Even though I trust the girls in my suite to not do anything like pee in the shower or do anything else disgusting, there still may be other germs that you can't see.
