| Question over internet use in college...
How do campuses monitor your internet usage?
Do they care about particular websites you go to? Do they ban certain sites (like 4chan)?
Will they know if you use Bittorrent clients?

| Not unless you use a lot more than what an average user does. Quote: |

| Probably not. 4chan itself isn't exactly hurtful. Quote: |

| Yup, I know people who've gotten warnings for DLing illegal items on Bittorrent.

My school doesn't monitor anything except blocking fileshare stuff (limewire, bittorrent, etc). You can actually look at porn at school without the modesty police breathing down your neck (plus most people in college are 18+, so it would be legal anyway...).

Well damn. How about using anonymous proxies? Or will colleges have those blocked?

Remember, college is not high school. Most schools don't filter web traffic at all- doing so would cause a huge uproar from the students and faculty. If you want to use an anonymous proxy anyways, go ahead- colleges don't block them either.
Quite a few colleges block filesharing stuff, but that's a different story than web traffic. Again, some schools may block stuff- but the vast majority don't.

95% of schools don't care as long as you aren't taking up a LOT of bandwidth or downloading things illegally. The 5% are religious private schools like BYU or whatever.

I know many schools (including mine) attempt to block illegal-file sharing programs and stuff. BitTorrent is "blocked" here... I say "blocked" because we've found a way around that. We've also got a huge DC++ hub running; it is God in file-sharing form.

I got my internet connection shut off when I was a freshman (5 years ago) for allegedly downloading a movie. They gave me specifics like title of movie, time, date of download, my IP address. It was a odd time (like 3am on a Monday), I was sleeping, I didn't have a roommate, and I had never heard of the movie in question. I had downloaded some music (only like 3-4 songs), but had never downloaded a movie. So, I had a hissy fit & yelled at the computer tech people and they restored my internet. I didn't download anything after that...
But, that was 5 years ago... imagine the improvements in tracking & blocking since then! Only download when you're at home w/ your parent's internet connection.

Surprisingly they didn't care when I downloaded around 5GB over two days. It was all legal but still... I didn't know how huge the stuff I was downloading was until I was done.
