don't like my roommate's friend

Ive been in school for about a month now and there is one recurring problem that i can't get away from. I was very uncomfortable here for the first month but i am slowly becoming more acquainted. There is however one problem i have here that i feel will prohibit me from becoming totally comfortable until i over come it. my roommate has this one friend that i just cant stand. the problem is that the kid is always in my room and i just cant be in there when he is so im stuck having to wander around until he leaves. i dont want to tell my roommate how i feel because its still too early and i dont want to strain relations with him. also, in the future i may find a friend that he doesnt like and i wouldnt want him to return the favor to me. what steps should i take to reclaim my room and have him be in the room much less to not at all.

Why don't you discuss this with your RA instead of asking random people on an online forum?
If you sat down with your roommate and explained your problem politely I'm sure you'll get positive results.

Well, it's usually best to get advice from friends (or in this case, intellegent strangers) before consulting with authorities.

But, yeah, just tell your roommate you'd like a little more time alone, and that maybe he and his friend should hang out at his dorm or in a public area more often. And make sure you don't sound accusatory or mean. Give him a few days, or a week, and if nothing changes, go to the RA.

Of course, you need to analyze your own behavior as well. Are you always in the dorm? If this is so, the time that the friend spends in your room may be exaggerated because of the extreme amount of time you spend in your room. Maybe you need to get out more. This doesn't have to mean excessive partying or anything like that. You could study in the library a few hours a day, or join a club or two.

Why don't you like him? Can you just be in the room and do your own thing while he is there...like study, listen to music, used your computer, talk on the phone, watch TV? Just cause your roommate has a friend there doesn't mean you have to interact with them. You shouldn't let them make you leave the room. You have as much reason to be there as them. I would just do my own thing and ignore the guy if he rubs you the wrong way.

Find friends that you can hang out with in their dorms. I am almost never in my dorm except to sleep basically. I don't really get along with my roommate.
