Research opportunities at state schools?

Has anyone emailed professors at their state schools asking if they could help with research over the summer? I'm thinking about emailing local CSU professors (I live in California) and asking about that, but I'm not sure if that would work...

Are you going to be a freshman?

Most research positions get filled much, much, much, much earlier than the late April/early May. If you're on campus already, usually you need to start looking in January, at the absolute latest, right when you get back from winter break...but the earlier the better.
