do college students text message during class?

Do college students text message during class? I would think it would drive the professors crazy.

I would hope that by the time these kids reached college they can manage to text without the prof noticing.

Why in the world would you text when you could have a whole laptop in front of you. I don't understand the whole text messaging thing and I'm apparently part of that "generation". :S

My mom texts me when I'm in class. It's way less intrusive than calling

I don't think anyone minds receiving messages in class. But yeah, it's kind of rude to respond/send while in class - might as well step out for a second if it's that important.

I text all the time during class. I also go on Facebook on my phone and sometimes make discreet phone calls (in huge lectures).

I hate people that do this. It is so annoying and distracting. You shouldn't even show up for class if you want to text, go on Facebook, and make phone calls.

I agree with insomniatic here. Making "discreet" phone calls? You might think you're being discreet about it, but it's invariably distracting to the other students and rude to the professor. In any case, I wonder why you bother going to lectures in the first place and am annoyed that any college-age person would be so disrespectful.

Yes, they do, and yes, it does. You might enjoy the "Drop 'Em Like They're Hot, Part 1" post from March 2007 on the Educated & Poor blog. I know a couple of people who adopted Miss Kitty's attendance policy.

I text in big lectures but never in smaller classes where I know it'll be more distracting. And I generally only text if I receive a message first and I try to keep it short. There are ways to text without anyone knowing that you're texting--putting the phone under the "desk" part of the seat, or my favorite--memorize the keypad and do it without looking.

I have yet to see someone writing a text message in class. Of course I am at a small college and it's hard to write a text message in a class of 10 w/o anyone noticing.
