Do most of your parents help you pay for college???

Well, I'm in my first year of college and my mother does not even help me at all to pay for tuition or other expenses. I mean its not like we are poor. She does own a restaurant. She's always saying that she doesnt have money and how raising four children is hard. She is a single mother, but even when she werent separated. My dad doesnt make more money cuz they work in the same restaurant. I mean..many of my college friends say that their parents help them pay for college. I'm covered for tuition but I had to take a $3,500 loan out per year to pay for the rent which is $550 per month. I just realize, how the hell am I going to pay back $14,000 after I graduate?? I'm planning to get a part-time job next semester so I wont need to take out loans. Even if I do get a job next semester, I still need a bit money for other expenses and I think my mom should at least give me a little bit of money. Seriously...she only pays for my phone, thts it!

Stop complaining.

You grew up in an upper middle class family with all the advantages that came with it. Others have it much much worse.

I'm not complaining. I'm just saying that parents should help their daughters pay for college when they aren't poor.

Because they said they will pay for my college education ever since I was little and that they are saving money for college later. But, turns out..that did not happen. I mean, most college student's parents does pay for their son/daughter's college education! I have a friend that has a total of 7 siblings and their parents still pay for her expenses and buy a car for her. I assume her parents make much less than what my mom does.

You seem to have a pretty heavy entitlement issue. You're an adult, nobody owes you anything. You're blaming your single mother who runs a restaurant (which are doing particularly poorly right now) and has 4 kids for not giving you money. If you seriously don't see the issue with that you're going to need a greater exercise in grounding than a message board can give you. You'll pay back the 14k with the job you'll presumably be getting after college. Unless you're wasting everyone's time and money by majoring in something that doesn't lend itself to a job and have no plans for what to do with your future, in which case kudos to your mom for not making a bad investment. It's good that you're going to get a job next semester but you have to realize that student loans are a reality for the majority of college students, and just because some of your friend's parents give them money doesn't mean yours can or should.

In case you hadn't noticed, the economy of crap. People aren't going out to eat as much as they did. How do you know what kind of bills your parents have?

My parents are not paying for anything either. Nothing at all. When I was 18 I thought it was really unfair, because they always said they'd help. They thought they would. Times changed. They couldn't afford all the things I thought they could. Tough luck. Do it yourself like everybody else in your position, like me. I am going to be $50,000 in debt after undergrad-- and I went to community college for two years. Then, if I am going to realize my dreams, I need to go to law school. And I am going into public service, not the big money corporate jobs. Your whining is pathetic. 14k? That's nothing. You could have gone to a school close to home and commuted like I did-- you're lucky to be paying rent. You have some serious growing up to do, and I hope for your mothers sake you catch up soon. The poor woman.

Dont you think its kind of hypocritical you said you thought it was unfair your parents didnt pay for your college when you were 18, and yet your belittling her even though shes doing the exact same thing you did at the exact same age? Shes still young, lay off her god.

Don't even complain. 14k is nothing, there are others out there who are going to be over 100k in debt after college. I'm already at 60k and I have two more years to go so I will be reaching 100k which doesn't include the interest also.

Unless you plan to get a job that pays $5 an hour I don't see how that's an issue.

Precisely. I got chewed out on online forums for whining when I was 18, too. :P Now I realize that they were EXACTLY right and I was being a whiney little brat. And I have 50k in loans! Private variable rate loans! It's going to be hell when I graduate! 14k!? Seriously!? Isn't there a post floating around that puts the average amount of debt of an undergraduate at like 40k?

14k is nothing. You are lucky to only have that much.
