If you are packing light and are coming from another country, just bring your essentials that you can't buy at any department store (such as photos, your favorite stuffed animal, etc). Usually there are a lot of very cheap stores around campus that you can buy stuff at. Then just store your stuff at college at the end of the year. But essentials for the dorm: laptop, bedding (it may be an extra long twin bed so make sure you buy the right sheets), pillow, plastic basket for shower stuff.
Ipod- upload all your cds onto your computer before going to college.
Buy a swiffer- essential for cleaning.

I have found the following reference books absolutely invaluable:

1. "The Elements of Style" (Strunk & White)
2. "The Bedford Handbook" (Hacker)
3. MLA Handbook
4. Barron's Student's Concise Encyclopedia
5. American Heritiage College Dictionary

actaully
PAllen what you are doing is against TOS
posting on multiple boards pushing your website.
I hae always been very happy with the quality at Garnet Hill
Bed bath and beyond also has a good selction of dorm supplies including bedding and will in addition ship to the dorm when you are ready, saving space in moving
Its true that the sheets sold through the school is often lower quality, but many sources out there for dorm supplies as you can see if you read this thread.

Thanks for the list

I'm the kind of person that needs to carefully think over things with a goal in mind.

I'm beginning to get into "packing mode" and this list is going to be so helpful. I'll have to buy a lot once I get there, since my parents and I are just doing a two-car roadtrip from CA to OK, but now I know what I'll need. Thanks, Kate! I just hope I can fit all that I want in my room!

great list- the OCD person within me is celebrating!

too all those who complained that it would be too much trouble to get all of this stuff beforehand when you could just buy it there: think about all the duplicates of stuff you you already have at home that you would have to purchase- what a waste of money and time!
