Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but bring an umbrella and rain boots. I can't believe how many fellow students wander around getting soaked.

a lot of that stuff you can buy as multi-function tools, parts of kits, or combine with others. For example:

-rain jacket, light jacket, and hoodie can be combined into a warm hoodie you wear when it rains.

-Corkscrew, can opener, bottle opener can be taken care of with an all purpose swiss army knife.

-Cleaning supplies can be combined into a bottle of fantastic/windex and some paper towels.

-utensils and kitchenware consists usually of plastic utensils (you can get fork/knife/spoon all in one package), a stack of solos, a stack of cheap paper plates, and one microwaveable bowl

Etc.

O_o

this is an AWESOME list. thank you so much, kate!! i'm not going to school for like seven more months, but it's never too early to start planning, right?

(besides, something tells me it'll be better to start stocking up on stuff and storing it away then buying it all at once... there's that semlance of spending less money lol)

I don't know if this has been pointed out, but those Bed Bath and Beyond links don't work...

Hey everyone! This is a great thread--a lot of things I wish I had known as a freshman! I'd like to give a bit of advice to incoming freshmen, too...one of the hardest parts of starting as a freshman is not knowing what to do & where to go in your new college town.

I thought you all might be interested in a site that a fellow Vandy student just started. It's an online travel guide focusing on college towns--it discusses where the students go, fun campus events, etc...It's written by college students, unlike most travel guides geared toward middle-aged people and families. Not only is it good when planning road trips and visiting colleges, but it'd be really helpful in learning where to go the first couple of months on your own campus!

The site just opened to the public last week, and I don't think I'm allowed to actually post the URL because of CC regulations, but message me if you want more info! I can tell you the URL and give you the exclusive code for full access to the site.
