When should you start your first Internship?

I'm an incoming Freshman and have been looking around my University's site for internships and there are a lot of cool ones that I would love to do. I am also planning on volunteering at local clinics and such. What time would be best to start an internship/volunteering? The summer after my first year?
Additional info if it might help, I'm going to be a Psychology major but am also considering Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior (long name, but it's one major). My course load for this first quarter is 14 unites, and I'm planning on taking 4-5 classes each quarter after.

Start ASAP. The sooner you start the more opportunities you'll have down the line. Don't worry if the first one isn't really what you want to do the rest of your life, it's just setting the foundation for you to get better internships the next couple years.

I don't think schools will let you register for internships this early. I already tried mine and my school has my account disabled right now when I accessed to a specific internship system site.

Like chuy said, start as early as possible. I had my first internship the summer before freshman year, and now I'm working on my second and third internships in my sophomore year.

I've never heard of an internship system site like Seachai has, so make sure to check your school to see if you have to register through a certain site. I know that at my school, you register for JOBS through a system, but most internships just involve applying directly to whoever is in charge of the individual one.

I went back to the management system with my school's email account and it says contact one of the representatives. I can't do anything as of now.

Just look around town for internships that are available. I did a practicum class that I guess could be considered somewhat like an internship with my school (working at the radio station), and then I've randomly found out about other internships and ended up with a great one this summer as a sophomore, even though I hadn't really planed for it! But even if you can't find one until junior year that's not too terrible, and you'll still do fine if you make the most out of your experiences!

I started my first internship the last semester of high school.

Guys, I'm in the same shoes as OP. Where and what are the best ways to look for internships? I've tried internships.com and the website seems to constantly malfunction each time I go to a section.

Anybody have a further idea for me?

I used craigslist to be honest. Just apply for things that will fit into your schedule and worry about what it is you want to do later on when you've built up experience. The internship I did this summer was mind-numbing clerk work completely irrelevant to my future plans.

Do you guys recommend me to practice on creating a compelling cover letter right now? I have little experience with so.

Internships before college? I may be wrong but I thought those were extremely rare...

I was told at my orientation that most interships, relating to the field you want to pursue, require some classes such as chemistry, biology, org chem, etc.
I realize I should start as soon as possible, but HOW soon?
My school is on the quarter system, and I don't think having an intership first quarter would be a good idea. So should I start second quarter, third, or summer?

Internships are usually not during the school year, they are usually during the summer. Co-ops on the other hand are during the school year, but you usually have to forgo a term to work at a co-op (its pretty hard to work a 40 hour day, and still go to school)

Agreed with vicious, wait til summer. If it's your senior year in high school you can start a little bit before school ends though, I started about two weeks before school ended, but that's basically summer.

When is the best time to start applying for internships in the Summer so you won't face limited reservations?
