No one was suggesting that. University administrators care about these things and that's the subject of this thread.

"Suggesting that an 18 year old choose UCSD over Georgetown or Dartmouth just because the former has exponentially more members elected into the National Academy of Arts & Sciences is ludicrous."

Last I checked Georgetown wasn't known for its science programs. And Dartmouth is 1/6th the size of UCSD. So why exactly is it "ludicrous" to choose UCSD? Oh, I see--it's because the most important factor is "the actual reputation of universities held (by) most Americans." Sorry but I don't think I would trust the masses who vote on the contestants on Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor to determine what constitutes a "good" undergraduate science program for me or my child.

I guess that the fans who bleed Big Ten, or whatever that conference is called today, have a better grasp than the DWTS crowd.

Aren't public universities no longer recognized by the masses? Don't tell me the masses apply rigorous analyses to form an opinion.

xiggi, I do not "bleed Big 10." (Nor do I have a child attending a Big 10 school.) But I also do not "bleed" USNWR. Again, you are toeing the line of confrontation for no reason. I don't get it. What is the point you are trying to make?

Is University of Virginia’s ‘reputation gap’ growing?

Is University of Virginia’s ‘reputation gap’ growing? - The Answer Sheet - The Washington Post

Quote:
“The board actions over the next few days will inform me as to whether the University of Virginia remains the type of institution I’m willing to dedicate my efforts to help lead,” he said.

As she left the meeting, one psychology professor said she felt much the same.

“I will find another job at another university,” she said, speaking anonymously so as to protect her current one. “I don’t want to teach at a place like this.”

I think these faculties maybe considering relocating to the nearby city of Columbus!! TOSU Welcomes You!!

P.S. barrons's 2007 list of NAS, NAE, IOM & AAAS needs to be updated. TOSU's number is 20 faculty scholars short.. (Thanks in part to Gee's heavy recruiting since returning!!

I have to say that a LOT of universities are over-rated. UVa is not alone. Its the nature of the beast.

Don't give me stats on Phd factories and scientific awards. I'm talking undergrad institutions.

Not saying they are poor. Only saying they get full of themselves.

And their alumni/parents/students/faculty are part of the problem.

Elitism is a growing problem in academia and college selection.

Like people who measure self worth with net worth. Silly.

Not sure why Sullivan left. We weren't in the room and neither was the Washington Post.

Her tenure was short......shortest ever. Sad.

She was beloved by students and faculty according to some reports, so this entire debacle is strange to say the least.

"Taxpayers are getting tired of paying for people to take classes in art history, ehtnic studies, and Scandanavian languages." And "We needd science (nincluding mathe) graduates. We do not need art history graduates."

Comments from the linked article (same poster). Is this just more "tea party"-style indignation?

According to famous hedge fund manager and UVA Alum Paul Tudor Jones, Virginia's slipping USNWR rank was cited as one of the reasons for Theresa Sullivan's dismissal.

^^^If that were true, he is a complete and total idiot. Sullivan was in the job for a whopping two years. Perhaps he expected her office to cook the numbers so UVA would look better to USNWR?

It actually did NOT work for CMC as the cooking had NO impact whatsoever on the rankings. The correct and naively "cooked" numbers yielded identical rankings. The silly attempt did cost a well-respected officer his career and the knee-jerk reaction probably did hasten the departure of the President. The negative publicity has yet to be fully measured.

Cooking the books is reprehensible and untenable in the long run, and ultimately a really moronic decision. While some obfuscation works for schools such as Cal or Middlebury, this is because of the lack of integrity of Morse.

UVA overrated?! What's next, sun rising in east! Pope is catholic!

This has been common knowledge for over 20 years. I am glad she finally admitted it and maybe they can begin to fix the problem.
