Why are people suggesting for-profit colleges? I don't care if they're one of the few accredited ones or the many unaccredited. They're businesses in it to make money, not to provide education.

The for-profits are suggested so the OP does not need to deal with people. Unfortunately, colleges everywhere have kids who are full of themselves. A friend's dad used to say, " Those of you who think you know everything are annoying those of us who do."

captainpiper, people aren't giving you straight answer because in some ways this website is pretentious.

I would avoid schools that are ultra-liberal and focus in on schools that have D-1 sports. These schools have the more laid back vibe I think you are looking for.

Some suggestion would be Wake Forest, Lehigh, Vanderbilt, Colgate, University of Florida, Texas, Georgia, University of Miami, Tulane, Kansas, Arizona State, Syracuse, Boston College, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc.

There are pretentious kids at stare schools...a little pretentious to think otherwise, no? I'm pretty sure there's pretentious people everywhere.

Yeah, but we have established that he wants to avoid hipster-pretentiousness and he can do it at the schools I listed.

There is a big difference between the vibe at NYU and the vibe at Wake Forest. Pretentious hipsters may be at both schools, but at NYU you would see them every day and at Wake it would be far more rare.

Somewhere I heard that Montana was the most laid back state in the union. From my very minimal travels, the mountain west seems very laid back to me, and I'm glad I grew up here.

I see where you're coming from!

Good luck in your search. I personally loathe hipsters, lol.

Instead of framing the question in such a negative way -- those type of people are pretentious (thus I am better than them, even though I am insecure about myself and feel like they are looking down on me) -- think about what type of people you enjoy being around and go from there.
