Sorry if I annoy anyone with this, but I was hoping to get some help with making a list of colleges to apply to.

First of all, I keep hearing people talk about safe colleges (sure things) How do you know if a college is a safety?

Moving on, my grade at the moment is an 89 (I think that's a 3.3 gpa?) and my current ACT is a 26, though I will be retaking it this February, and I will be studying this time. I have no extra-curriculars at the moment, because I'm homeschooled, though I'm looking into finding something. (Open to suggestions! )

I want to major in journalism, preferably with a minor in photography or a concentration in photojournalism.

Anything else you need to know just ask.

Can anyone help me choose some colleges to apply to?

Are you a senior? If so, you need to get applying to places soon as many have deadlines... If you are a junior, you have some time, but yes, get working on those extra curriculars. Start doing something that interests you. Many colleges also like to see an outside class taken at a community college or similar so they can see how you do elsewhere. Those are also good sources of Letters of Recommendation.

A safety school is a school you are certain you will get into and is affordable. To be certain you'll get in, check their incoming freshman stats and you'll want to be in the top 25% of students with a decent acceptance rate (> 50% acceptance rate). To be certain they are affordable, each college has a net price calculator on their website. Run those numbers with your parents.

There are many schools that will accept you with your stats - not tippy top schools - but many others. The affordability will be the key.

A safety is a college you are ensured of being accepted (usually if you're in the top 25% of grades and scores) that you like and can afford.

Volunteering can be a great extracurricular. My D (HS senior) just started putting in a lot of volunteer hours at our local food bank. We live in a city with a large food bank organization, and she has been able to volunteer collecting food at the farmer's market, packing food in the warehouse, giving food out at food shelf locations, and volunteering at events that raise money for the food bank. But you can look into local hospitals, nursing homes, whatever interests you.

If you want college suggestions, some info that might help:
- Are you applying this year or in some future year? Can't tell from your post... if it is this year, Feb. is late for the ACT for most colleges (there are a few that have late application dates where it could be used, though)
- Is money an issue? If so, what state do you live in?
- Do you have a location preference? Size of college preference? City vs. not in a city preference?
- I am confused about your "grade". Assuming you are homeschooled, then you probably don't actually have a grade point average (your post sounds like you are taking one class right now?).

If you provide more information, we might be able to help with some suggestions.

Your town may have a list of local organizations where you can volunteer. Try looking on your town's website or the public library's website.
