I posted this question several weeks ago. The answers I received helped me concludethat it is not really a plus for the college apps, but that it isn't a negative, either. Several people said they viewed it as a valuable experience. In general, it is regarded as a better way to spend time in the summer than, say, doing nothing . Also it is quite expensive, and colleges would assume that if you go your family can afford to send you. It is probably not worth going out of your way to earn or raise the money for if what you are ultimately interested in is looking for something that looks good on a college app.
