Data comparing liberal arts colleges in the sciences

liska21liska21 Registered User Posts: 328 Member
I posted some data on # of PhDs by LACs graduates in another thread.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1881324-table-of-colleges-and-university-that-produce-awardees-of-nsf-graduate-fellowships-p1.html

But thought I'd start a separate one on the small LACs, specifically the "Oberlin Group". I'll post some data crunching I did related to strengths in the sciences (more geared towards hard sciences). My D was looking at LACs and it was hard figure out which ones were especially strong in the sciences. This info helped us figure out schools to explore, esp schools that were strong but not impossible to get into (and afford).

    One of the things many LACs hyped on the tours was the number of Fulbright Scholars they had. Here's the data for the Oberlin Group broken out by teaching and research Fulbrights. Sorry for the wretched formatting.

    Number of Fulbright Scholars 2011 to 2015
    from http://us.fulbrightonline.org/component/filter/
    There are two types of Fulbrights for US students.
    To do research in another country and to teach English in another country.
    I have listed these separately.

    Another look at production of graduate students by the Oberlin Group of small LAC colleges (+ a few more similar ones that I added). This is the baccalaureate origins (where they got their bachelors) of PhDs in the hard sciences from 2004 to 2014. I downloaded the data from here: https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/webcaspar

    Similar to this table, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19567186/#Comment_19567186 but I downloaded the PhD field detail so I could break out CS and Math. Numbers are a little lower since NSF must have aggregated more fields than I did for their aggregated table (which I used first).

    What's the Oberlin Group?

    Any reason colleges appear out of numerical sequence in "Fulbrights-English/Teaching" and may often be listed twice?
  • Youdon'tsayYoudon'tsay Registered User Posts: 18,945 Senior Member
    That first chart is so confusing that I chose to ignore it. :)

    The Fulbright table above has 3 separate columns: 1 for teaching Fulbrights, 1 for research Fulbrights, and 1 for the total Fulbrights. Colleges appear once in each column. To make it easier to read, here are the Research and Teaching Fulbrights separately.

    Those are numbers not percentages, so you're not getting the full picture. A percentage would take into account variation in size of student body.

    Pardon my ignorance of Fulbright scholarships, but a quick look at their website leads me to believe they are not just for science, and if so, most of what you have posted has very little to do with strength of science programs at LACS.

    Yes, I realized after posting that I should have changed the title. The Fulbright Scholars are not just science.

    I've been mainly looking at #s of PhDs in the sciences and was thinking of the 2nd table when I wrote the title, but the # Fulbright Scholars was something that came up in many tours of LACs. And I was curious about that too so looked it up.

    Regarding the size of the institution, yes some are smaller than others. So you have to take that into account. Pitzer and Scripps are smaller LACs (~1000) so their #s are especially high per student.

    You might also want to look at med school admissions. Many very bright undergrad science students pursue medicine rather than PhD/academia/research careers.
  • liska21liska21 Registered User Posts: 328 Member
    @marvin100 I thought about that but couldn't find that data. It was pretty easy to download the PhD data from NSF.

    Small liberal arts colleges (mainly the 'Oberlin 50') sorted by PhD production in the hard sciences with some extra info on the colleges. The detail on degrees in which the PhD was awarded is here:
    http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19572642/#Comment_19572642

    Adm.Rate = 2013 admim rate
    Size = 2013 or 2014 enrollment size
    PhD.Prod = PhD in the hard sciences 2004-2014 who had their baccalaureate from the school. Data from here https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/webcaspar
    PhD/1000 = PhD.Prod divided by size
    %Need = % Need met. Data from collegedata.com
    %Merit = % of student who got merit aid in 2013 or 2012. Data from these 2 lists. First from WA Post and if not there, I looked at the NYTimes article. If not on either of those, I looked at collegedata.com
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/apps/g/page/local/college-grants-for-the-affluent/1526/
    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/07/08/education/edlife/8edlife_chart.html?_r=0
    Ave.Merit = average merit aid award. See above for data source.

    @liska21 : I've since realized that my question (post 4) related to the way I was holding my device. Held sideways, the formatting is clear. Thanks.
