| I don't see why everyone is criticizing the list. It does not claim to be a ranking of the best universities in the world. The overall quality being evaluated is globalness, whatever that means. Just bc most people think Princeton, for example, is a better school than UCLA doesn't mean it should be above UCLA in this ranking. Yes, Newsweek is just trying to sell mags but I think this list is much better than its ranking of high schools. |

| I'm guessing than this is not on undergradate study alone, which would be a list that would be more relevant to the high schooler (or to me, anyway).
Brown is 56... below U. of Illinois, U. of Wisconsin and other such schools. I beg to differ! I see Brown as a liberal arts college-wannabe anyway... and I love it. We don't have the best overall graduate programs though. | |

| I'm fine with these rankings. Before criticizing them, you need to look at the criteria.
Most of the criticism "why is A not above B" is just illogical and inane, and typically biased by homerism to one's alma mater.
If you want to criticize the heavy focus on research, fine. However, keep in mind that when an international student considers overseas colleges, he/she is in the majority of cases looking at a scientific field, and if you're going into science good research done at a school can only be a good thing, made especially better if you can get your hands on it. | |

| I have a hard time believing that UMinnesota Twin Cities comes out ahead of Northwestern, or that University of Alberta comes out ahead of Brown, CMU, and Emory.
Everyone knows that the SJT rankings (on which these are based) are worthless and ridiculous. They really only rate the amount of research output by the faculty in certain publications and disciplines, and not the quality of education. Also, are international faculty and students somehow better than those from the native country? | |

People on this site are rediculous. It seems as though people make up a ranking with their FAVORITE schools and just say everyone else is wrong.
You can argue with the methodology (e.g. US News has flawed methodology) but you cannot argue with the way the rankings fall. Besides, if you think about it, most of the rankings that people here hate tend to have all the same schools schools on top anyway. They just tend to be shuffled around a bit. Generally, they fall in the same range anyway. If there is a great variance you may need to pay attention to the methodology of the rankings and accept that as the reason. Bottom line: there are many great schools out there. Just because you think school x is greater than school y does not mean that it is in fact better. By some measures it may be but by others it may not. | |
