Brown probably safer than Harvard but some more frequent incidents on campus recently at Brown. A recent thread on New Haven here suggests Columbia may be safer than Yale.

Columbia's crime rate is far lower than that of Harvard. In a 2003 Department of Education study, 27.6 out of 10,000 Harvard students were found to have been victims of violent crimes, compared with 14.8 out of 10,000 at Columbia.

... They are smack in the middle of Philadelphia and New York City, respectively.

Check Sac's post again--based on facts, not opinion. Columbia's crime rate is far lower than Harvard's. It is smack in the middle of one of the five safest precincts in NYC. Also, look at the link that alphacdcd provided.

Or just cross it off your list; lots of other folks will be glad to lose the competition! :)

Honestly, you aren't likely to get mugged or shot at any of the schools...

Many of the people who say that Columbia is unsafe are usually the ones NOT from New York, they tend to slap a negative violoent sterotypical image of NYC onto Columbia. It's understandable that many only have one day experience of NY or heard from word of mouth.

Go visit, you'll feel it immediately...there is usually a safe vibe you walk around it.

Then again, I might be biased ;)
