I am astonished at the admission rates/percentages of early admission and early decision schools. Some that are highly selective (less than 30%) for regular decision have 50% or higher EA or ED rates, one of which was Dartmouth.
I really wonder if those percentages are accurate.

researchermom-- sorry, I hadn't noticed your follow-up question. A good amount of schools w/ Early Decision have 2 rounds, like CMC. I think its simply a strategy by the schools to enhance their application pool and yield. The top, top elites don't do it, but many of the next round down do. An example....say Joey doesn't make it ED to Dartmouth, but can still go ED2 to Middlebury, with the belief that this would be a good tactical move assuming a better acceptance rate for Mid's ED2, rather than just RD.

Great thread. I did note an incorrect ED admit rate for Kenyon College. While Fiske lists it at 84%, the common data set has it at just above 50% for 2006-2007.

one other point about ED1 vs ED2....I have picked up anecdotally here on CC that ED2 acceptance rates are generally somewhere between ED1 and RD....that is, going ED2 is not as favorable as going ED1, but a bit more favorable statistically than RD. I have found very little hard evidence of this from "official" records, as the CDS only records total ED numbers, and I haven't found any public reports by colleges detailing the stats for their separate ED rounds......plausible though.

Dartmouth had a 29% ED acceptance rate for class 2011.

Auburn does not have early action. They offer rolling admissions though...4 to 6 weeks after you apply they will send a decision.

I have a question - if I apply ED to one school, can I apply EA to others? Obviously I would withdraw my EA apps if accepted to the ED school, but if I was rejected/deferred it would be nice to still get some early acceptances.

I have a question...Im most interested in Carnegie Mellon and Cornell; and when i looked at them on the ED list, cornell's chances of getting in was 63% while CMU was 49%.
This doesnt make sense to me...especially cause cornell is much more higher in ranking than CMU. some one explain?

tako it was really nice of you to write of this list but the list must be old because the acceptance rates are not right ie upenn hasnt had a 33% acceptance rate in years

Does anyone know the answer to Knights09's question about whether
a student can apply ED to one school and EA to another? I've been
wondering the same thing for awhile.

This might be a dumb question, but I only see UC-Riverside out of any of the UCs on any of those lists. Does that mean most of the UCs only use regular admission?
