I live in Maryland. I am not going in state. Everyone goes in state. Everyone. Last year we sent someone out of state to a tiny school in PA called Bloomsburg, and five years ago we sent a full pay double legacy to Rice. In the last five years, we've sent a total of four people out of state (not including the military).

Ha ha, I posted in this thread 2 years ago that my S wouldn't consider staying in-state for college. He didn't - he went 3000 miles away. Now my D refuses to stay in-state. She's looking at California. At least it's closer.

I refuse to go to school in Boston or Massachusetts. I can go to better schools than UMass-Amherst, I don't want to go to school down the street in Boston and the costs at the private schools (I will not be getting any financial aid probably because of my parents income) are ridiculous.

We told our kids that they were not allowed to go to the local U -- literally in our backyard.

I don't want to go to a state school, or a school someone in my family does to/went to.
I like being different.

My kids were strongly discouraged from going to school in-state (we are in Southern California). My D went to the northeast, and my S is looking at schools all over the country. We feel very strongly that its important to leave home and experience a new environment and new people in college.

I love the University of Minnesota, but i just wish it wasn't in the Twin Cities. If it was up in Duluth and not ten minutes from my house I would be going in a second. Still, it's the only instate school I'm considering. Otherwise Madison is where i want to be. Perfect distance from home yet I still get instate tuition. I want to stay in the Big Ten. Michigan and Penn State look amazing yet i don't know why the OOS tution has to be so insane. Otherwise Lawrence, Kansas looks pretty sweet and although KU ain't the Big Ten, it's still the midwest and i like it!

I would never go to a school in Texas, unless I was financially forced to. (The difference in tution for in-state students is huge - or at least in the schools on my list)

I will not go to a college in NYC. I want to come back eventually but need to get away for the time being. Upstate is fine though.
