I'd be interested in a list of colleges that appeal to
the active/involved student. The kind of kid who is
heavily involved not just in high school activities but
who is a joiner in their hometown community too. A
campus where there's a lot going on - and not just
partying in their rooms and frat houses and doing tons
of homework. Someplace that also has a connection to
the real world around it - the opposite of the academic
bubble mentality.
I visited Elon some years ago and it had that kind of
feel. Any others?
Claremont McKenna College places a great deal of importance on extracurricular involvement. Applicants are typically very involved with clubs as well as volunteering and hold a few leadership positions. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "a connection to the real world," but a good portion of CMC students enter the business field, with 1 in 8 becoming CEO, CFO, president, partner, or some executive.
From personal experience, everyone at Boston College is very involved within the University and with the surrounding community. Community service is HUGE, as we even have classes which combine philosophy and weekly community service in the city, for example.
Intramural sports are really big at Colorado College, if that's something you're interested in doing.
For activity within the community, I've heard good things about: Bates, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, Elon, Lewis & Clark, Tulane, Berkeley, Colorado College, Reed, Hampshire, etc.
