That's something which has been discussed before on CC. If you apply to a less popular major and *if* it's clear from your classes and ECs that it's something you've been committed to all along, then it might give you a very slight edge. But it's not going to be any kind of major (you should pardon the pun) advantage.

Brown has what are called concentrations, not majors. And, independent concentrations are encouraged. Students write proposals for independent concentrations.

At Cornell, a concentration is different from a major. A concentration is like a minor but can be even more flexible than a minor. For example, at Cornell students in any major could also have a concentration in education or information science.
