Looking at college's

With summer here and college visits possible, I was hoping to get a list compiled to look at and consider visiting. I'd like an intellectual college with matching students, and the college must not be directly affiliated with a Christian religious organization. So Southern Methodist University is a no, but Earlham is fine.

I like to debate things, I'm an environmentalist, an intellectual, and definitly sleep flat on the left side of the political spectrum. I'm pretty sure I want to write for a living, or possibly research, but I'm not sure in what... I'm interested in Cognitive Science and all of it's componets: Philosophy, computer science, linguistics, anthropology, and neuroscience.

I have a 30 ACT composite, full AP/GT (Gifted & Talented) course load whenever possible, run Cross Country (which I would like to also do in college), and am in Philosophy club.

I'm looking generally at the LAC's, with places like Hampshire and Bennington looking pretty cool as you can plan your own study. I'm looking for safeties, matches, and reaches. So any specific suggestions whether in or out of that category would be great. :-)

Thanks!

Reborn, some to possibly look at are Wesleyan, Vassar, Bard, Goucher and Sarah Lawrence. Good luck!

You sound a lot like me in terms of interests. I started a thread here a couple of days ago and people have given me lots of recommendations, including Reed, Carleton, and Davidson.

Johns Hopkins has a highly regarded Creative Writing program within the top 3 in the nation with neuroscience being one of the top three most popular majors on campus. Research is also bountiful on campus as well.

Other than Hopkins, Like you mentioned, I have friends at Bennington and Hampshire who both are into writing and philosophy. They love it there especially the atmosphere and the type of matching people they find there.

Creative Writing, cognitive psychology, and computer science are all Top 1 to top 5 at Carnegie Mellon. For the rest, like linguistics, it is not quite as strong as its peers.

I would suggest Lawrence University in Appleton, Wi. All the components you are exploring are part of that campus environment.
