ucbalumnus Cornell is not a "Public Ivy" it is simply an Ivy League School. It is a private university. A land grant institution is one that is given land and funding by the state and in return has to offer programs such as agriculture, industrial relations, etc. to benefit the people of the state- it comes from the industrial revolution. Because of the state funding, tuition at land grant colleges (ILR, Cals and Human Ecology) is lower for NY residents. This does not affect the Coll of Engineering, CAS, Architecture, or the Hotel School).

If that list is in order, no way Texas is below UCSD, Illinois, UNC, UVA, and Washington! It's not possible looking at the departmental rankings across all the academic and professional schools.

These are just lists of what are widely considered the top public universities. So, is there any point in calling them Public Ivies? Or, do y'all have any other criteria why it's even a useful term to apply to this group of public universities?

TOSU is a 3-D School

It is very tempting for me to replace UCSD with TOSU, but I will wait until around 2015 for a decisive academic upgrade.

As for now, UCSD is certainly seen more favorable than TOSU based on the rankings. However, know that SD lacks overall academic breadth and depth when compared to Ohio State. TOSU is certainly more well-rounded and complete as a state's flagship school. In fact, TOSU contains nearly 2x the undergrad student bodies, likewise, 3x the graduate student bodies than SD. TOSU pursues a comprehensive teaching / learning approach, in which it offers over 12,000 courses and employees 3x more tenure-track faculties than SD, and covers all professional schools (Med, Law, Dental, Vet, Pharm and even Optometry). TOSU academics include nearly all disciplines with over $5 billion annual operational budget and 4x the endowment compared to SD. Most importantly, state-of-the-art facilities throughout the entire campus! Last but not least, top notch Div-1A athletic programs which SD offers none (Div-II).

I see UCSD as more of a 2-D school - more similar to GTech and Purdue than the all-inclusive flagships Public Ivies listed above.

P.S. Contrast to TOSU which receives strong state legislature support, and a world class library (6 million volumes), SD is currently forced to sell its library collections in order to make ends meet. This alone should DQ SD from the list of Top Public Ivies!

UCSD needs D-1A sports in order to compete with UCB or UCLA

“Since 2008-09, we have already taken about $5 million in cuts,” said Brian Schottlaender, the university’s library director. “We have managed to take a series of small cuts — reduced hours in several of our libraries, consolidated service points, slowed down our digitization efforts.

“But when we found out we would have to take at least an additional $3 million in cut in 2011-12, it became absolutely clear we could not do it with these nickel and dime cuts any more.”

To deal with the cuts, the university has closed its medical center library, the International Relations & Pacific Studies library, and the Center for Library & Instructional Computing Services. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is slated to be closed next year.

So, besides liquidating part of school's library collections, one or more libraries were/are to be closed due to $5 million budget cut. If that were the case, I consider UCSD to be rather unstable compared to tOSU. Even with $50 million budget cut, I doubt tOSU will be closing any of its libraries. Now that I am home, I see UCSD actually tied with TOSU in terms of "Undergrad Academic Reputation Index" on last year's USNWR ranking. So I guess they are peers at the undergrad level. Even their freshman selectivity is nearly identical in terms of SAT/ACT scores, but SD does have much lower acceptance rate with "100%" Top-10% HS Class vs 55% TOSU.

Anyway, UCSD needs fundrasing campaign, or perhaps borrow some money from either UCB or UCLA if possible. Probably easier from UCLA due to its proximity.

Breaking News!!

Quote:
Dr. Teresa Sullivan, 60, will step down as the president of The University of Virginia on August 15, the university announced this past Sunday. Sullivan will have served at the institution for two years--the shortest presidential career in U-Va's history.

The news came as a great surprise to the greater U-Va community.

"We all had a very positive outlook on President Sullivan," student body president Johnny Vroom told The Washington Post. "That's why it was such a shock."

Ann Marie McKenzie, a recent U-Va graduate and former chairman of the student-run Honor Committee, echoed Vroom's statement, saying that she thought Sullivan was an "effective leader and had a vision for the university."
Teresa Sullivan, University of Virginia President, To Step Down After Two Years

Quote:
Reportedly, Sullivan is leaving because she and her trustees disagree over how to confront the challenges facing not only Virginia but many public and private institutions of higher education: declining state aid, an aging tenured faculty, a bad economy and how to adapt its value proposition in a digital age.
Teresa Sullivan’s resignation: How should universities adapt to the modern world - The Insiders - The Washington Post

Another one bites the dust.. Perhaps Dr. Sullivan could now be considered the job of either Illinois or UCB's Chancellor / Presidency..
