Good news, I never really thought much about trying common application, I'll take another look at the site.

The fact that the Common App now has 35 public-college members (and that's overall and not on its new-member list) is actually a pretty big deal. Although founded in 1975, until the beginning of the current decade there were no public institutions on the Common App roster. One reason for this omission is that the Common App requires all participating institutions to use "holistic" means to evaluate candidates. In other words, colleges must evaluate applicants on the basis of both objective and subjective factors. They can't consider only grades and test scores and, instead, must require at least one essay and one teacher evaluation.

So the insistence on this holistic approach will automatically rule out the public institutions that do not assess their applicants holistically.

true but with the exception of Rhode Island and SUNY-Purchase most of the public universities added this year to the common application are not very well known

Neither are many of this year's private colleges!

Well the point I should have made is that overall, the list of public schools on the common app are not really among the top public universities in the country.

There are a number of biggies on the list. See https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Members.aspx

You'll see some very selective public schools on this roster ... e.g., University of Virginia, College of William and Mary, SUNY Binghamton, Miami of Ohio, & New College of Florida.

I believe the Universal College App has more publics (and is intended to be usable by them, too) but it is currently shut down for annual maintenance, so I can't confirm.

The Universal Application does not require that colleges practice holistic admission ... probably an intentional decision designed to outpace the Common App when it comes to public-college membership.

So what top schools remain not on the CommonApp bandwagon?

Georgetown is the only private one I can think of.
