Well it really doesn't cost much to apply to a school. You just shell out another application fee and some time in putting together essays. Most people apply to Harvard for the sake of applying to Harvard, and what's wrong with that?

Hi Cali4nia,
At first I though your post was a non sequitor. Then I looked back on Page One of this thread. Quote: |

Actually, this data just shows how little self-selection there is in the Harvard applicant pool.
Based on this data, almost half of the people who apply have SATs below Harvard's 25th percentile. Why bother? Did they research the school at all?
And 85% of Harvard's applicants were not valedictorians of their high school? What are they thinking? Yeah, I'm 25th in my class and I was editor of the yearbook, so I'm applying to Harvard?
Maybe I'm nuts. But it seems like common sense that, if you don't have a very strong class rank and 1400+ SATs, you probably aren't going to get accepted to Harvard. Who is advising these kids?
So what we really have is half the apps going straight from the envelop to the recyling bin and an acceptance rate in the high teens from the stack of "real" applications. | If you were responding to the interesteddad post on Harvard Applications on page one of this thread; those comments were left four years ago.
So you probably won't get a reply from him.
But in answer to: "what's wrong with that?"
I would say nothing; as long as you can afford the application fee and recognize the likely futility of the effort. |

Dad'o'2 - Thanks for the advice on how to find common data set info on collegedata. I love it. I was curious about one piece of info I found. When reporting the average indebtedness for graduates of 2007, are they reporting total for 4 years or average for 1 year? For instance, at Brown the average indebtedness for 2007 graduates was $18,610. That can't be for 4 years, can it???

They don't answer any of the Wait List questions, other than they have one and it's not ranked, but posting the CDS is a start
Now if only Washington U in St Louis and Duke U would start posting their CDS |

and you're so right, wash u loves to keep their stats secret, it's funny because they're required to publish their cds, but they did a great job of hiding it, and any info on them is fragmentary at best
