What colleges are going to be best for me?

I want to go to an LAC I'm a sophomore my GPA is 3.6 haven't gotten my PPSAT back yet I'm part of Writer's Workshop and Musician's Workshop and play Guitar Piano Trumpet and sing well. I'm interested in comparative literature, philosophy, and maybe pre-law. I go to Cate School and have always really applied myself and show a real "passion" I'm a liberal and could be labeled a "hippie" whats the right place for me.

Oberlin(excellent music conservatory)
St. Olaf excellent music....
Grinnell
Macalester
Carleton
Kenyon

You may need to get your GPA up a bit, but if you EC's are good and you have really good SAT's you should do fine.

I know someone that went to Cate School
Depending on your scores, I'd say look at some LACs
You definitely have a chance to raise your GPA this year, so I wouldn't consider top LACs/lower Ivies out of the question (assuming you have solid scores, ecs, etc)
Good luck!

i'm working very hard to get my GPA up and have been successful so far...

also i'm taking my second year of language this year and will take 4 years of language before i graduate

also, does beign from Cate School, give me much of a better chance anywhere because its obviously harder to have a high GPA here

Rhodes is a place that might be a match for you. Good music, lit, and philosophy, and outstanding acceptance rates to law school. There's no pre-law major; most of our students who go to law school major in business, political science, international studies, history, philosophy, etc. The political scene is reasonably balanced.

Rhodes is not that liberal. I think Oberlin may be a great fit. Great school and the music is superb. Very liberal school too.

I'm a sophomore and i go to Cate School (prep school on the west coast)
3.6 or 3.7 GPA
want to take Philosophy
Play piano, guitar, drums, trumpet and sing
volunteered at a home
done volunteer work at local food bank
show real "drive"
i give good interviews (sounds really arrogant but i'm really good at talking...)
really value self-expression
don't have my PSAT back yet...
I'm looking at Brown and also some LACs...

what are my chances

Way too early to tell without board scores.
And there are good LACs all over the country and every level of selectivity.Relax and enjoy your next year.

In the midwest, Grinnell, Macalester, Oberlin and Carleton are possibilities, assuming that 3.6 is your unweighted GPA. (St. Olaf's is a good school with excellent music, but is not "hippie" or even very liberal.)

In new England, Bates and Hamilton are the most 'free spirited' and Bates is SAT optional. Don't know much about Skidmore and Bard, but they might be worth a look. Vassar is more artsy than hippie, and if you are a guy, you might find it a match. (A reach if you are female.) Check out Colorado College (which has a block schedule) and Reed, which appeals to the non-conformists among us. Among the non-LACs that have 'LAC-like' characteristics, Brown might be a good fit-more artsy than hippy but very liberal. Ditto Wesleyan.

SUNY New Paltz would be a good fit if you want to come to NY. The town which is a 5 minute walk from the university has a very hippie, artsy vibe and the school attracts lots of alternative and creative students. It's about a 20 minute drive to Woodstock. Check it out.

^^^

Although Wesleyan is called a University, it's grad programs are so small that it has always been classified as an LAC, not a non-LAC with LAC like qualities. I agree it could be good, though.

A note of caution to futurebutterfly and other new posters:

You can get lots of help here on College Confidential, and it's great that you're getting a head start on the college admissions process. However, I caution you about disclosing too much detailed personal information on this forum or on other sites. You can provide relevant information in a general way. Example: instead of mentioning your school name, just characterize it as public/private, big/small, competitive or not, etc. Just give enough information to allow others to help you, but no more. Many of us have never heard of your school anyway (we're from all over the country) so the name does not tell us much.

Good luck and have fun with this process!
