I really have no idea where to apply to, there are just too many colleges out there!

Race: Afro-Puerto Rican, Ecuadorian (1st Generation student)

Location: Small Public School in Eastern NC (about 2-3 from graduating class go to UNC-CH)
Intended Major: History and/or International Relations

Rank: 9/270 (top 5%)
UW GPA: 3.96
W GPA: 4.6

SAT I: 540 CR, 550 WR, 610 WR (Taking it again this Saturday)
SAT II: I'm taking US History and World History in December

5 Total AP Classes when I graduate, plus tons of Honors Classes:
AP English (Junior Year, 2)-NOT sending that score
AP Stats
AP Earth/Environmental
AP Europen History
AP Gov/Politics

Extracuricullar Activities:
Marching Band (4 years)-Drum Major for 2 years, Clarinet Section Leader (10th grade)
Jazz Band (2 years)-Principal Tenor Sax player

Symphonic/Concert Band (4 years), 1st chair clarinet (thru Middle and High School)

2nd place Drum Major at Crystal Coast Band Classic Competition 2008 and West Craven Band Classic, 3rd place at Rose Band Classic and 1st place at Crystal Coast 2009

Recieved 2 Gold medals in the both Contemporary and Classical Musical/Instrumental categories in the NAACP ACT-SO competition (for youths of African heritage); went on to finals at the national level in NYC, did not win, but had a great experience!
Went Leadership Seminar at East Carolina University for a week (nominated by teachers)
Attended NC HOBY Leadership Seminar at NC State University(nominated by teachers to go)
Was sent to attend George N. Parks Drum Major Academy at UNC-Charlotte
NHS, Mu Aplha Theta, NSHS, Beta Club, NEHS member of all these clubs
Junior Marshall (only hispanic in top 10% if that means anything)

In terms of volunteering, I have not done that much for the simple fact that I live in an area where its necesary to have a car to get anywhere in town, as well as me having to take care of my little brothers while my mother goes off to work all the time. Because my family cannot afford a car, I was limited to what I could do outside of school (and and sparing the burden of my only mom to pick me up from everywhere and drop me off as well). Embarassing as well to be the only senior to not have a car. Blah.

Family Background:
My mother is a Afro-Puerto Rican born in the South Bronx, NY and my father was born in Quito, Ecuador and immigrated to Queens, NY when he was a toddler. My dad did not go to college and my mom did go, but never graduated. Currently, my mother is single with 4 children to raise by herself, with an income of less than 50,000 a year, so it is very hard for my family and I to get by. I've done with what I can with the circumstances by which I live in, if you understand where I'm coming from with all of this.


SO.....with these stats, what would be a good list of colleges to apply to?

In terms of criteria:
Anything in the Northeast, unless there is a college I could really have a chance at getting accepted that is not located in the East. I want a good amount of diversity, because it is really hard for me to connect with people that do not relate to my latin carribean culture (no one listens to Salsa like I do). No rural, but suburban/urban location-wise.

I have a list, btw, but it keeps changing and changing and changing......you see the pattern.

You have a very strong GPA and academic rigor but your SAT scores do not seem to accurately reflect your abilities, at least the scores you provided. If they do not improve, you might want to consider a test optional college. There are some exceptional test optional schools and it keeps expanding. The ones that come to mind are Connecticut College, Holy Cross, Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg and Muhlenberg. There are many others that you can find on fairtest.org. Connecticut College does have a great deal of diversity. Good luck
