Can OR residents or anyone else with an informed POV please share w/ me their perceptions of the following OR publics. DS wants football. He is (or maybe I mean "I am") in the preliminary research stage. I think he will end up with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.4. No clue about test scores yet but I assume he will score over 600 CR and not break 500 on math. It his weak area. We live in CA and he will apply to CSUs too but I don't know much about the following:

OSU
U of O
WOU
SOU
PSU

I don't know anything about those schools LOL, but thought I'd say "hi".

What CSUs is your son applying to? As a home-grown Southern Cal girl, I thought I'd be nosy!

BTW...I know that Oregon and O State have big football, but what about the others? Will your son be disappointed if the school has football, but not many people "pack the stands"? My son's GF goes to a school where hardly anyone goes to the football games, and she now wishes she was going to a school with Div I BCS conference football games.

Has you son expressed what he'd like either way?

I know UO has automatic admission for anyone with a 3.0 GPA.

Hi mom2college! All of those schools have football but some are D2. Still in the fact finding stage and Alabama seems soooo far from home. DS will likely apply to Humboldt State; D2 fball and to Sonoma State and CSU Monterey, no football but D2 basketball. SDSU may make his list but it will depend on his stats. He's actually talked about a couple of CA privates too. One with D2 fb and the other with D1 basketball. It is still early so I am having fun doing some research.

Knights09 is that true for OOS applicants too?

U of O does not have automatic admission for a 3.0 GPA. From the Uof O website:
Automatic Admission

For automatic admission, earn a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.40 on a 4.00 scale and complete at least 16 college preparatory units with grades of C- or better in each course.

Thank you Puma and Knights. Hopefully he will make it to that GPA since it will open more doors for him.

Another question...CA is now fairly open about the fact that most majors in most of our public Universities take at least 5 years to complete. Is that true in Oregon as well or is it easier to complete your education in 4 years in Oregon than in CA?

I think it depends on the student and how focused they are on finishing in 4 years. In CA I understand some of the problem comes from not being able to even get into the classes one needs to meet graduation requirements. That, in my experience, is not so much an issue for kids in OR schools. If a student is dedicated to finishing in four years, I think that's very doable, and mostly up to them.

The following colleges participate in the WICHE program and so out of state tuition for CA residents is 150% of the Oregon in-state rate. Some limitations might apply as far as major.

Has your son said "how" important football is?

I know that some on your list are Div 2 sports. Do you know if those games are well-attended? If not, do you know if your son will be annoyed that his school doesn't have well attended sports?

vballmom, not University of Oregon. It is a WICHE/WUE college, but not for students from California.

My thanks to all who have helped to answer my questions here.

Here are some answers to the ones you have asked me:

We are still so early in the process that DS has no real sense of what he wants for sure and even if he did, it would likely change by the time his sr year rolls around. Because it is so premature have not had any formal talks about his college selection. He has indicated casually that he would like to be able to attend a school where basketball or football have a large and noisy following.

I am in a fact gathering mode and am creating sort of a preliminary, "when the time comes he may want to look at the following" sort of list.

I think football games that are well attended, regardless of the division, would be OK with him.

Thank you rent of 2 for your replies here and on the thread in the parents' forum. You gave really very helpful information.

Anyone have thoughts on sports at Western Oregon U?

^ yes you're right about University of Oregon not accepting CA students via WUE, 'rentof2, I should have caught that.
