Hey guys,

I was looking at the recommended courses for transfer students on the W&M website. I'll be applying for Fall 10. Here is what I have for next semester and I want to know if this the courses are correct according to what W&M recommends. (I currently am a student at NVCC.) There are some of the classes I will be taking:

History And Appreciation of Art I - Same as GER 5: Literature and History of the Arts?

Principles of Anthropology I - This for GER 4. In one of their curriculum examples they have a course called Cultural Anthropology but I don't think we have anything called that. Or would United States History I be more beneficial? I'm took Western Civ. already. Or should I take both since I do need 3 courses in that GER?

Introduction to Photography - Would this fulfill GER 6: Creative and Performing Arts? I just got a new dSLR and have always wanted to learn how to use one so I'm going to be taking this regardless.

I'm also taking a math but I don't know what else to take. I wanted to do a language but I can't since it coincides with my other classes. ( ex. Both classes same time/same day and they don't have alternatives. :/ ) What other classes are recommended?

I'm not aiming for an associates but these are some of the classes I've already taken:
Psychology (2 semesters)
Biology (2 semesters)
English (2 semesters)
Creative Writing
Introduction to Interpersonal Communication
Lifetime Fitness And Wellness
Introduction to Philosophy
Introduction to Religion
History of Western Civilization I
Introduction to Computing

You should strongly consider a math class... that seems to be the one type of course missing. That, of course, should also cover your GER1

which GER 4 (A/B/C) does anthropology fill?

photography might well fill GER 6.

The classes at W&M all say what GER they fill when you sign up for them. Coming from another school, you will have to do your best to find comparable ones. You might still need a physical science.

Philosophy should take care of GER 7.

Art History should be good for GER 5.

Creative writing should fill GER 6, so you might not have to worry about that one. That's what I did for mine.

Shmelke: I am going to be taking math. :] I just didn't mention it since that one is easy to distinguish in the GERs. Sorry for the confusion.


Soccerguy315: I think it'd fill History and Culture outside the European Tradition(GER 4B). I know UVa has a similar requirement and when I talked to a representative from there she said Anthropology would fill in the non-western history. However, I wanted to know if it'd be the same with W&M.

Here is the course description:
Inquires into the origins, development, and diversification of human biology and human cultures. Includes fossil records, physical origins of human development, human population genetics, linguistics, cultures' origins and variation, and historical and contemporary analysis of human societies. Lecture 3 hours per week.

It's under sociology, though. :/


Waltzingout: Thanks for clearing that up. I wanted to take photography for fun and I'm glad I won't have to worry about GER 6 then.

sounds like it would probably count then. Don't worry about it being under sociology, that shouldn't matter at all. You can always email someone at WM to check.

what are you planning on majoring in?

Biology. I haven't any more sciences because I am considering medicine and was informed that medical schools want you to do your sciences at a 4-year school rather than a community college.

W&M Admission

You should definitely take a math class (required for the AA anyway). ART 101 does fulfill both GER 4A and 5. Photography will not fulfill GER 6 since W&M doesn't offer credit for photography. The Anthro course would likely be a GER 4 and not 4A. Western and US history are great courses for GER 4A.

Check out this link (http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergra...cs_courses.pdf). It lists all courses by their VCCS number and shows how they do or do not transfer to W&M and whether they fulfill a GER.

Okay, so I was wondering... For the creative writing credit, it says I need to take two classes (creative writnig I and II). However, it'd overlap with the intro to Italian class I'm taking... Which should I take? For the Woodbridge campus, they don't have many options available so it's either or and I can't travel much because I have a job aswell.

Which would be more benifical? Italian or Creative Writing?

And random.. For the supplement can transfer students submit artwork (even if they are not planning on getting into an art program)? And if they are allowed to, can they submit a personal statement aswell?

Daughter is looking to transfer after this freshman year. She hasn't been able to fit a math class into her schedule but intends to take one this summer. How can she let it be known on her application?

There is a part on the common app called "additional information." I think I remember them mentioning this when I went to the transfer day two months ago or so.
