1.) Smoking: none of the freshman dorms are smoking. only a few of the upperclassmen dorms are. if you smoke (anything) you'll have to go outside your first year at least

2) Hartley/Wallach are dry dorms and you will lose housing if caught with any alcohol. For Carmen/Furnold/JJ, it all depends on your RA which change from year to year. some legitimately dont give a flying f**k while others will make you pour it out and write you up for it.

3) you're 18 (hopefully) so its legal. just dont disturb anyone around you and you'll be fine.


like i said, ra's change. for example carmen 6 last year basically didnt have an RA, they were just NEVER around, while this year they have a nazi

There used to be non-smoking and smoking floors. Getting rid of the smoking floors just caused people to smoke in the rooms b/c it's so cold to go outside in the winter.

Moreover, there's plenty of pot smoking indoors, which is obviously a crime in addition to being against the policies.

This is wrong under NY law.

i cant really comment on any of the other dorms but i know the JJ RA's crack down pretty hard on this. at least this year. i had a friend who was smoking in his room and the RA smelled smoke from the hallway and told him to quit (said he would write him up but never did)

First of all, I'm pretty sure that a minor who engages in acts of sex is committing no crime. There's likely no law: "You must be 14 years of age to have sexual intercourse and must be 18 years of age to engage in deviant acts of sex."

A different issue is statutory rape. The basic age of consent in NY is 17. That means that someone 18+ is guilty of statutory rape if they have consensual sex with someone 16 or younger. But the 16 year old is guilty of no crime by virtue of being 16 and having sex.

That means 18 and 17 is OK. I'm not sure what happens if both are 16 and under.

actually NY also has this four year rule (if i remember correctly), so if the person is four years younger than you but underaged its still legal, sortof a way to protect teenage relationships and abuse of the law. (funny story, before i went to college my parents thought there was a curfew and stuff and they like kept an eye on you....of course i didnt correct them until after i sent in my housing forms)

as for smoking, one of my floormates freshman year used to smoke weed in his room and noone ever confronted him about it. Yes, they did used to have smoking and non-smoking floors in upperclass dorms but they did get rid of that and i'm glad they did cause people used to get stuck on smoking floors when they didnt smoke....however in all suites (except for hartley/wallach) it is up to the suite's occupants whether or not to allow smoking.

It is very easy to get away with having alcohol in "dry" dorms (which include all first year dorms)....as long as your not walking down the hall with a bottle of exposed booze you'll be fine.

Those kinds of things exist, but I have no idea whether NY has it and whether it still has a minimum age of some sort. Those kind of things are designed to protect 18 or 19 and 16. But I can't imagine 16 and 12 being OK.

as for sex: ageofconsent.com has no info on that, it just says that NY's age is 17.

but as for what happens in the dorms? Basically there are two things to remember:

1) It depends entirely on your RA. Only a very few are nazis, although some get ridden hard by their area director and are forced to bust up parties.

2) You will never get in SERIOUS trouble for anything as long as:
- You don't destroy property or hurt anyone
- the NYPD doesn't become involved (and they won't be called unless there's a situation that campus rentacops can't handle)
- You don't make someone in Residential Programs look bad (i.e., don't put someone in a position where they HAVE to do something)

Maybe one or two students a year lose their guaranteed housing status over serious ****, like assaulting an RA who tries to break up their party. Usually the worst that happens is you get a stern slap on the wrist. And even if you lose that guaranteed status, if you come in and show that you're not a d-bag, the housing officers will find a way to squeeze you into a room anyway (just not with your friends, or in choice locations).

This means:

Alcohol? Don't leave it out when you're in lounges. at least brown bag it. keep it in a bureau drawer or something, they won't ever do full searches of your room.

Pot? Open your window and shut your door. Your first week, maybe ask your next-door neighbors if they'd mind - of course they'll say no, but it'll give them less of a reason to complain later, and if they do complain it'll be to you, not to an authority.

Sex? If you got a single, no big deal. If you got a double, work out a system with your roommate. And if you can't get laid, see the part about alcohol.

There really is a "common sense prevails" approach to all of this. You'll be treated like an adult and given a lot of rope.
