Water

Fairly random question but are there water machines in John Jay or do you need to buy bottled water/boil it if you want clean drinking water?

And I've seen people mentioning Brita filters - what are these and how do they work?

there is a small water fountain downstairs, it's a pain to keep getting water from there, most people get filter jugs, and filter tap or shower water. some just drink tap or shower water without filtering, i think nyc water is safe to drink.

brita filters are pitchers with built in filters, so you pour the water in dirty and it comes out clean, lol. there is a drink machine with water on the bottom floor of john jay, which you can use flex with, but generally it makes sense to bring your own supply or at least the brita.

NYC water is some of the best in the region. It comes from reservoirs in upstate NY.

definitely get a Brita filter. the things are fantastic. and it'll save you a lot of annoyance keeping you hydrated in your room. Filters should be changed every 3-4 months, get a 3-pack of them when you buy the pitcher.

edit: and NYC water is very pure when it reaches the building, but do you really trust the 100-year-old pipes in John Jay to not put any crap into the water? I didnt' trust Plimpton or Hogan and was really glad I had a brita.

the machine is, unfortunately, the type where you can "hack" it and get multiple drinks for the price of one (at the expense of it thinking everything is sold out).....people often exploit this hack and you can be staring at a full vending machine but wont be able to get anything from it.
