Hi guys,

I got an interview to 7 out of 8 schools that I applied to and Columbia is the outstanding one. Columbia is one of my top choices (and I made an extra effort on that supplement as well) so I'm really disappointed! Other people at my school got interviews..... what does this mean?

Also, I heard that they started releasing likely letters this week so I'm kind of dazed/confused. Is being a non-interviewed applicant (from a school/region where others WERE interviewed) a bad sign?

Stats: GPA 4.5/4 W , 2370 SAT 1, 800 Math II, 750 Physics

Doesn't mean anything, really. It's all about the availability of the alumni in your area and how many they are willing to interview. There's a good link on here with common interview-related questions but I'm sort of too lazy to go find it... point is, it's not a "sign" of any sort.

Likely letters are mostly being mailed out to SEAS kids, it seems, so especially if you're a CC applicant, I wouldn't worry. Either way, likely is likely, and not getting one shouldn't be taken as a "bad sign" necessarily.

Relax. My D was only offered a phone interview because of where we live and she declined because she felt that there wasn't much to gain/lose from a coversation over-the-phone. She recieved a Likely this past Tuesday. She too thought that not getting an actual interview meant that she was going to be deferrred or rejected, but that turned out not to be the case.

To the OP:

I had the same question. I didn't receive a Columbia interview either, and I'm a RD applicant with excellent stats (virtually the same as yours). It's not like I like in Wyoming where alumni are not available; I live in frickin' Silicon Valley, and my friend who lives in NJ (with equally good stats as mine) didn't get an interview either. I hope we didn't have to apply for an interview or anything...

Interviews are entirely random and completely unnecessary for admission.

The way interviews are assigned is that there's a database/map of every applicant to Columbia, and alumni are asked to log into the database and interview a few candidates. Each alumnus chooses for himself whom to interview, after searching by zip code and then selecting a high school on the map with an applicant.

So the admissions office doesn't control who is interviewed. If you didn't get an interview, don't sweat it!
