some people like to argue stability. personally i dont agree with that because when a mac locks up its like a frickin paperweight and nothing else. although i suppose it probably happens less times than windows at least with windows you can always pull a three finger touch of death.

in my experience, mac tends to have better support (as long as you have a plan and/or are still under warranty). dell support absolutely blows and lenovo's isnt that great. dunno about toshiba/asus/gateway tho.

its a nicer programming environment if you are into that stuff

can always run windows and osx on a mac nowadays

eh, im sure there's more convincing arguments out there too, thats off the top of my head for now

Every time I've had a problem with a Dell computer they've sent me a replacement part in under 24 hours with no charge.

I will be at Columbia next year and intend to buy a Macbook in June, but it would be helpful to know what the discount is?if it is in fact different from the regular academic discount?so that I can plan.

So these deals that come about in the summer (free printer/ipod, etc)--does anybody know when in the summer they'd be? What do you consider the best time to buy?

Also, with the the student discounts from Columbia, is it possible to get a decent Mac for under $1000? That's my limit, and I wanted to get a Mac, but I'm starting to think that a laptop PC would be all-round a much better deal in that price range.

i see 1049 for white 1.83ghz intel core2 duo macbook, 512m ram, 60gb hd, combo drive.


just as a side note: osx NEEDS at least 1gig ram to run well. however, you should never buy it from apple, so overpriced its not funny. i just upped mine to 2 gigs for 150$ from newegg.

do it yourself. you remove the battery then along the edge closer to the center of the computer there is a removable wall (you have to take out 3 screws) and then there are little levers you push to pop out the current ram
