It would be great to see any increase in ED numbers verified by an official source. It has, so far, been mentioned only anecdotally without any reference as to where the information has come from. It may be that one poster is reading it from another and taking it as fact. As far as I can tell, the numbers have not been mentioned in any publication.

EA applications have risen dramatically for some schools--but it would be quite something if a school had a 25% increase in ED applications. I'm not saying that it's not possible or true, just that you would think that this would be reported.

I don't think the increase has been substantial, I've read that the increase at Columbia has been extremely modest.

^ I didn't think the increase was big either. But if the notification date got pushed back so many days, there has to be a good reason for it. A modest increase wouldn't cause such a long delay right?

Assuming that the date is actually pushed back, there could be multiple reasons for this that have nothing to do with having to process more applications.

Blah, there was a link somewhere on this board to an article. I'll try to find it.

Yeah, I am not completely sure of numbers but 25 percent jump puts it past Yale. Techincally Yale had a 38 percent increase, but really 18 percent since 2005, as EA apps dropped a lot last year...this is all from that NY Times article...I'm guessing that moderate means at most an increase by 500 apps, but then again I'm not fluent in adcom.

Wait, I take that back...It's been a long day and I'm not thinking straight...and increase by 500 or so WOULD mean a 25% increase...and someone did mention that in the Spec thread...but I doubt those figures are accurate, if NY Times reports on Yale's jump being huge and Brown, Dartmouth, and Columbia as only moderate.

A moderate increase is probably a few percentage points, which is to be expected in a year when there are so many students applying. It is not surprising that EA schools would experience a steeper increase as students become more savvy and look for certainty during an uncertain cycle. However, it would be really surprising to see a huge bump for any ED school because--no matter what the admissions climate--there will always be a limit to the number of students who would want to be bound.

nimby58, that is a good point.
I hope that also means we (ED applicants) stand out more.
