MetroPCS vs Verizon cell phone reception?

I've heard that T-Mobile and AT&T reception are not very good in the Columbia Uni area, esp around Amsterdam and 121st. Does anybody know about the new MetroPCS service, and how it compares to Verizon? Verizon doesn't give any discount to Columbia students... Any other tips on acquiring cell phones would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

T-mobile i know still has a LOT of odd gaps on campus (John Jay, college walk, pupin, etc).

ATT ha vastly improved its reception since I was a freshman 3 years ago. I get 3g all over campus and everywhere in the city i go to with a pretty crappy phone (not iphone).

Never heard of MetroPCS...there's probably a reason for that tho....

How would one rate Verizon versus AT&T for reception?

Like the OP, I've generally heard that AT&T has a lot poorer reception than Verizon... given Skraylor's post, I'm just curious if AT&T still has a big difference in reception compared to Verizon, or just a small insignificant difference? (mainly interested in NY area ofc)

Thanks in advance!

i would definitely shy away from metro PCS....despite their huge advertising campaign in the city they are still really new and definitely trying to reel people in with their unlimited plan for 40 bucks (which is a sweet deal, but i'm sure the reception is spotty)

as for the verizon vs. AT&T comparison: you get what you pay for. verizon has better reception but it costs a whole lot more (you get way fewer minutes for the same price) and texting is more expensive. so it really comes down to whether you are willing to pay more for excellent service or willing to pay a bit less and put up with pretty good service but not the best.

For the majority of places, it's an insignificant difference. Some of my friends will get reception on certain subway platforms that I'll be out of service on but that's about it really. AT&T has stepped up their game in the city since they took over cingular.
