Chances for a Hispanic! RD

Hispanic male attending public school in NY, did not grow up speaking spanish
GPA of 94/100, ranked 20/240 (top 9%)
SAT - 2150 - 740 CR, 670 M, 740 W
SAT II - 770 world history, 750 US history, 700 spanish, 680 spanish w/ listening
APs -
5 World History, 5 US History, 5 European History, 5 English Language, 2 Biology
Currently taking: AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Spanish, AP French, AP English Lit, AP Calc AB, Physics, and Psychology

Studied abroad twice in Spain over the past 2 summers, taking courses in Spanish language and community service

President of National Honor Society and my high school's JSA chapter, officer in Multicultural Group
Member of Foreign Language Society, Spanish Club, French Club, and Rotary Interact (international community service organization)

For my intended major of linguistics, i should also note that i taught myself french throughout my sophomore year and the summer of 2008 to the level where i am currently taking AP french. additionally, i have started teaching myself russian this summer and will continue to do so throughout the school year to prepare for college courses.

I think you have a really good shot. Especially because Columbia is always looking for linguistic and foreign language majors. The Dean of Admissions said it himself.

oh okay i was confused.

griffonr: you show a lot of passion for what you do. definately play that out in your essay/why columbia.

i am also interested in lingusitics. however, i didn't see linguistics as a possible major on the list when i applied online... i know columbia has a department and a major, but i didnt find it. is it there?!

I hope I stand a good shot! I have a solid personal essay on teaching myself french and im looking forward to finishing the why columbia.

wg90210 - I saw the Linguistics on this page, under areas of study. I assumed it was a major as well? haha

I mean its not going to help you in any way. But i dont think itll hurt tremendously. If Columbia is your first choice why didn't you apply ED?

Well it's not my first choice, but there are about 5 schools that I'm applying to where I would be equally happy, so Columbia is very high on my list....and I didn't apply ED anywhere because I would like to compare all my FA packages.
