How can I get into Columbia?

I am a Junior in high school and Columbia is my top choice. What do they look for in an applicant? Would legacy, minority status and applying early decision significantly improve my chances? Which is more important: good grades, or taking tough classes, even if the grades aren't perfect? Do they look at AP test scores?
Any other tips?

Diverse, interesting people.
Yes, yes, and yes.
Getting good grades in tough classes.
Possibly.

Don't be afraid to take academic risks. This includes class/school participation as well as taking tough classes.
Just work hard and have fun. If it works out, it works out.
Hint: it always works out, one way or another.

Don't do whatever just for Columbia. Join activities you like, show passion in whatever you do best/like best.

Get high(perfect?) grades in the hardest classes possible. Score well on your standardized testing, and get good LOR's/write good essays.
