A supplement is a mini application which many colleges make on their own. The supplement essay would be the essay on said supplements.

um for the letter of recommendations if you're using the common app then do you HAVE to get 3 ... specifically from two teachers and a counselor... or can you get one from one teacher, one counselor, and one from someone outside of school?
sorry for all the questions!

Most colleges using the common app specifically require 2 recommendations from teachers in core academic areas.

^It doesn't matter in what subject teachers they are, does it? In other words, if I'm more of a Lit/History person, it doesn't matter that my 2 recs come from Lit/History teachers instead of a more "well-rounded" choice from a Math/Science, right?

| My GPA is out of a 4.3 scale
The Common App doesn't give an option for a GPA on a 4.3 scale...what should I do when it comes time to fill out that part this August?

just a few basic questions ...
can i actually start typing into the common app sample form for 2011-2012, or do i just start typing it out on a word doc?
and also, i'm looking at the 6 essay choices ... i'm kind of leaning toward the 5th one but does it really matter? do some people write one more over the others?
and finally, do all colleges require the common app, then supplements for each school?

For the letters of recommendation questions, you have to read the school's policy. For some schools, they will want two teacher recommendation letters from different subject areas and do not need the counselor recommendation form. So for these schools, you would not have to use the counselor recommendation letter form to send to them. However, other schools may require the counselor rec letter with the teacher recs, so you have to read up on the colleges' policies that you are applying to.
echoyjeff222: You cannot start typing into the new common app form until august 1, you may only view a pdf of it and start "drafting" an application if you want. In reality, filling out the form may take only half an hour to an hour (only the essays take a good amount of time, the rest is just self-reporting ECs, awards, test scores, etc.)
It doesn't matter which essay choice you pick. As far as I know, none of the choices is more favored than the others. They're treated equally; the main part is just making sure your voice comes through whatever you're writing about.
Most colleges that use the common app will require supplements. Again, this is something you have to check with the specific schools you're applying to. But most of the schools do have a supplement.
For the recommendation letters, several schools want them from two teachers in different academic subjects (math, science, social studies, English, foreign language). From what I've been told, what matters most is getting the letters from the two teachers that know you the best - so if they are a math and science teacher, respectively, then go ahead.

hi everyone! so i read all 5 pages....
So basically, fill in the common app starting august 1st.
and then write supplement essays?
So you need to write 2 essyas for each school?
1 common app and 1 supplement?
And do you have to fill in the common app every time you send one to a different school?
