When they say first generation

Where does it ask this on the application? Like i know on the sat it asks where mother and father went. Does the application just say list hooks: blah blah?

Also, does being 1.5th generation college help?

1 parent went to college

"Hook" is a term that was invented on this site. You will never see any questions like that on an application.

On Common App, you are required to fill out a section about your family, so they will see that your parents and siblings did not go to college.

I doubt that the term "hook" was invented on this site, because it is used in plenty of "How to get in" books that were probably written before the site was made.

The application will have a section where you fill in a bubble for either both parents attended college, just one parent did, one person went but didn't graduate, and so on.

This doesn't apply to me, but are you first gen if your grandparents went to college but not your parents? My grandmother's mother did not go to college, but her grandmother did. So when she applied, was she first gen?
If no one had gone to college in my family since that grandmother's grandmother (my great-great grandmother) would I be first gen?
I'm just wondering if there is a point where a college gap is the same as first gen status.
