What's an IM address?

I was looking at the 2009-2010 First Year Application and it has "IM address" across from Email. What's an IM address? Also, is this the application for the Graduating High School Class of 2010? Like people who would be in the class of 2014 at the college they were admitted to?

Instant messaging - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you are planning to enter a college or university in the Fall of 2010, you should be filling out the Common Application between now and Spring of 2010.

My head hurts wondering how one can not know what a IM address is, especially coming from a high school.

I know what IMing is. I just don't see why they would like to send me an instant message, so it was kind of odd. Is it required?

if you don't have an IM address and you don't write anything down, will colleges think that you're hiding it from them?

I put my IM down (had to get a new one; my other one sounded...middle school)

they shouldd think we're hiding it from them. most people i know made their sn in either grade school or middle school & have never changed it. mine is embarrassing, to say the least : P

oh god, who exactly would we expect IMs from? that's just awkward...

The college wants some way to contact you--they'll be happy with just your e-mail address, as long as you check your e-mail. You might want to consider creating a new e-mail address for this purpose, especially if your old one is halofanatic. Your new one could be your name, as in johnsmith@whatever.com
