| Suspension explanation
A student I am advising was suspended (junior year) for texting during class, a violation of school policy. The teacher asked him to surrender his cell phone (for the weekend/it was a Friday). My advisee refused, so the teacher sent him to the principal, who backed up the teacher and gave the student the option of a one-day suspension.
The student opted for the one-day suspension. He did a reasonably good job of explaining (in his Common App essay re: suspensions) why he made that choice. He felt it was unfair (nothing stated in printed school policy) and that possession of his cell phone beyond the class or the school day was an invasion of his privacy. He has not used his cell phone in class since the incident.
Can any admissions staff weigh in with thoughts/advice? Thank you!
