Rank users by posts

I think it would be pretty cool if there was some ranking of users by number of posts. Then we could see how we measure up, and who's posted lots. I know other boards do this, and I think we should too!

This would just encourage people to comment on everyone's chances thread, or on threads just to get their post count up.

I thought this would be a good idea at first, but then after looking at some users, post a day, I started to not think as highly of it. I'm seeing people post over twenty times a day, which is fine if you know what your taking about. But I'll see some people with over 1000 post, and come to find out that their only juniors in high school. I've got nothing against juniors posting advice, but it should seriously be taken with a grain of salt. I woud like to see more of a thing that says "Prospective College Student" or "Current College Student". Thus we'd get a better idea of who were getting advice from and who were giving advice to.

What's wrong with how it is now? Things have been working fine the way they are. It's pretty obvious who has posted lots and who the experts are. Besides, cc doesn't allow a lot of things other boards do because besides keeping everything streamlined, they want to be helpful, and how often you post shouldn't be taken into account.

kinglin, I think that the high school juniors with three posts trying to give everyone advice are even more worrying. If you have 1000+ posts you've been around for a while and have likely picked up quite a few things, regardless of your age. (This isn't at all self-referential, of course.)

That said, I suppose a "current college student" tag might be useful.

I guess if we did have tags they could be "high school student", "parent" college student" and something else for the few people who don't fit in any category (Joev comes to mind) maybe something for everyone out of college category?

It is a bit confusing at first, and it takes a while to get to "know" CC'ers (more than once have I seen a foolish newbie try to argue with his fellow "student" Carolyn lol). However, I think the current system works very well. If college students want to put their college under "location," they can.

Personally, I think how long a person has been on CC is more trustworthy than the number of posts they have.

well... there can be reputation points for ranking, but then it doesnt really fit in with the main purpose of collegeconfidential.
