To those who've been on here forever...

To those of you who can reference previous years' discussions, etc., how long have you been on this site? Why do you stay?

I am just curious because it seems like many people who post often are not even looking for much info and don't have a specific reason to be here. Then I realize even though I am applying this year I don't have any questions really and am not super knowledgable, so I have no specific reason to be here either. This site sucked me in completely. Will I still be posting next year?

I found it to be an on-line equivalent of community service: the subject is something I've come to learn quite a bit about (including a year's total immersion on CC and reading "college books" by the ton). There are a number of parents who have been here 2-3 years or longer...we were talking about that in the Parents Forum recently.

Students staying on after they get into college are rarer. There's Xiggi and AriesAthena, though she's a special case, and umm.... Though it warms my heart to see an occasional student from the past drop in and visit...kinda like visiting your old high school when you're home from college on Winter break.

hmm volunteering work. haha. anyways, I been on this board since 9th grade and I'm a senior now. Like TheDad said, students staying on are rarer. However, I think that more college students should be on this board for more direct information to these colleges.

I think that it's too bad that more students don't come and volunteer here after they go off to college. Many students stay here getting lots of advice when they are going through the college search process. It would be wonderful if they came back to offer help to those coming behind them. Some students do this, but they are rare gems.

What particularly ticks me off, though, are students who stop by only go get advice for themselves when they are going through the college process. Some such students don't give any advice or information at all, but have no problems trying to suck dry everyone else. Some don't even bother to say "thank-you." Fortunately, such students are rare. Most give as well as take when they are using CC as they apply to college.

NSM, I think part of that is an artifact of the prestige-seeking me-first me-only disease that seems to infect a third to a half of the student posters. I wish that more students would come back. I can think of a dozen off the top of my head whose input would be very useful here. However, knowing how frantically busy they are, I guess it's a matter of time and priority. Thank you Xiggi & AriesAthena.

We have some student posters who return, but of course starting college can be all-consuming so it's understandable that lots don't.

With our stronger individual college communities, though, I hope that a few DO return to help younger students through the process. A college freshman can provide a unique perspective on reality vs. expectations while still remembering what it was like to be a HS student.

We also have some college students who may not have been past CC members but who take the time to answer questions from prospective students. We appreciate their contributions, too.

I've been here since my eigth grade year and I'm now a junior (hs). I stay because it's addicting basically. I'm going to be on a lot less from now on though. I haven't been on for about a week which is highly unusual. It just started taking up so much time, and I'll be getting really busy, so it'll probably be once a week from now on.

I TRY to help out as much as I can, since I know far more than any hs junior should. I consider myself to be reasonably knowledgable, and while I occaisonally post for myself, usually I'm trying to help people out.
